I’m thinking about getting back into painting model kits, and apparently using an airbrush makes things go super quick. Are there any rules about painting in the space? It’d be nice to be able to prime & basecoat down at the hackspace.
If there needs to be some work done to set up a very well ventilated little painting corner, I’m totally willing to put in the time to get that done.
Sadly, but understandably, the stinkbox got dropped from the floorplan during the move, but this was the intended use for it. I’m guessing the loading bay is best as Jarrett mentioned
lug = roll. Just bring a chair and a little table out with you? If you
are painting a model [I take it to mean like a Revell model?] I, for one,
think it should be worth a try in the space and see how it goes.
Obviously I’m not Grand High Overlord of Acceptable Projects, but I’d say that an airbrush could work so long as you are open to the idea that if people complain about the lingering stink then it’s a deal-breaker for future use. Unless someone wants to jump in and make that ban, I say give it a try and be respectful… maybe pick a quiet-ish night or something.
I was actually thinking of maybe learning how to make resin casts so that I have crappy copies to work on, although learning the 3d printer is another route I could look at!
I’ve heard of an individual in Burnaby who opens his garage up as a “Dojo” to teach airbrushing and other modeling techniques. He has stations with proper ventilation and has several airbrushes set up for people to use.
I havent participated in a while, but its through a gundam building club. They just had a meeting on Sunday, which are monthly. If you attend the meetings, I’m sure you’ll hear about the Dojo.
Well, saying it like that will surely ingratiate you with these guys and get you invited to their houses. They’re also associated with a general scifi and godzilla model building club called Monster Attack Team Canada.
What I’m trying to point out is that the VHS is one type of community space, with one kind of mandate. We do electronics and computers and 3D printing WELL. We could get a few bike tools, but we’ll never be OCB or The Pedal Depot. Painting lacquer paints with an airbrush requires a certain level of infrastructure we dont have, and maybe wont ever get. Unless a dedicated group of members decides to build a fume extraction system, I dont see the VHS being the best place to do this.
I’m also interested in airbrushing! My only question about the paint used for models. I’m guessing it’s solvent based? If so - would prefer it in the loading bay, which I know, sucks.
The ideal would be getting a fume hood setup so people can paint at the space and work with other stinky chemicals to their heart’s content.
Simmer down, it was a joke. Hence the smiley. As much as I wold love the lessons, I have more projects than time/space as it is. I agree that there are plenty of other groups out there with different specialties who would be of great interest to members here, and this could absolutely be one of them. Perhaps a thread to that effect could be handy, what do you think? “Other groups around town and their specialties”?
Yeah, I had that in all the floorplans I submitted, shame it didn’t come to pass. Hopefully next space when we have more room.
Adam Savage recently did a one day build of a beautiful model ( this video is what renewed my interest in model painting ). It seems like he uses a laquer based paint, and then an oil based paint for details.
