3D scanner

Continuing the discussion from Painting @ The Space:

Do we have a 3d scanner, or is there a member who might be up for bringing one in for a show and tell? I know John B with 3D604 has/had a Kinect-based one, but that is the only one I’ve ever seen in use

I believe @wander has loaned one to the Space and I saw it on the shelf above the 3D printers…

I’ve got a Kinect and a Structure 3D scanner…both (can) use Skanect to scan (I’ve got the Pro edition which came with the scanner). I’ve also used ItSeez3D (iPad app that requires the Structure) to do quick scans of objects or people (in full color).

You can also just use AutoDesk’s 123D Catch app and literally any camera (even a smartphone) to scan objects/people for free without hardware. All the heavy lifting is done in the cloud.

This is the scanner in the space: Matter and Form - Flexible 3D Scanning Hardware & Software

Luke has kindly got it working with the Mac on the 3d printing bench. It
uses two lasers and a camera to scan, and can scan in colour.

It is susceptible to light in the background, so it should be faced towards
the wall to reduce noise.

The scan generates a point cloud, you’ll have to find a way to convert that
to a geometry suitable for 3d printing.

Also, the scanning process is quite slow.
