Because this is IN THE LEASE. I think we shouldn’t be doing this unless the property manager has signed off on the electrical plan. I suggest we postpone until next weekend.
I have spoken to a few of the directors and I believe everything is well in
hand. We were planning to access the panel in 105 but it is not crucial to
most of the work.
It is really unfair to treat volunteers who are not members of VHS this
way. I am NOT going to ask a journeyman tradesman who is giving us his
time, expertise, and labour (as well as his willingness to pass on his
contractor savings for materials) to come back a week later because we
can’t get our shit together.
If people want to put off the wiring then so be it. This particular
volunteer electrician WILL NOT be coming back next week or any week after
that. We can just run extension cords all over the space like we did at the
bunker risking electrocution, fire hazards and eviction.
If the Directors are fine with taking responsibility for this, then I’m fine with that.
Paul came by and spoke with me yesterday. The electrician is licensed for the CoV, so pulling permits afterwards shouldn’t be an issue. This is the normal order that wiring gets done in, and all of our work will be outside of the walls so inspections, fixing issues, or pulling everything down (worst case) is not a problem.
DRAMA!
So, what happened?
We have the place completely wired!
Iqbal (my cousin) and his buddy Kashmir of Sunstar Electric spent the
entire day (almost 8 hours) legally and properly wiring the new space. We
have 3 isolated 220volt 15amp outlets and a host of isolated 110volt 15amp
outlets.
VHS-ARC even has its own electrical power with separate breaker!
In all we installed about 15 outlets so unlike the bunker where 40
extension cables were plugged into a couple of breakers we have many stable
power points.
Other than the existing kitchen-type area it is almost impossible for the
new space to trip any breakers. There is even a dedicated plug for
temporary power to the workshop tables.
Spoke to the landlord first thing this morning and he is on board with the
improvements.
This cost VHS about $100 all in materials.
At a minimum we need to add Kashmir and Sunstar Electric as a friend to VHS
on our web page. If you need licensed qualified electrical work please use
our newest friend!
FUCKING AWESOME!
++ talking to landlord, this was my biggest concern with the above conversation
++ all the 220 volt
++ $100 bucks is NOTHING for the improvement this provides.
++ on all the breakers and not blowing circuits.
++ isolated VHS-ARC supply
I can’t wait to drop by the space to use it again.
++ VHS
Can you please post a link in this thread to their site? Do they have a site?
Great work - thanks to Kashmir and Iqbal!

He doesn’t have a webpage.
Bird’s eye view of the run from the front of the space
The left and right pairs of plugs are on different circuits
Second set of 110 plugs and a 220V plug for the machine shop.
Hybrid 110/220V plug for the lathe.
Hybrid 110/220V plug for the laser cutter.
All plugs are labelled with the breaker for that circuit.
A super job that two certified electricians spent 7 hours working on today!
Between these kind folks and Science World bailing us out, I’m thinking some kind of award plaque would be nice to give to people who help us out in a big way.
An appreciation plaque? Great idea, and I’d be happy to contribute to it.
Also, how about offering those gents a one-year membership?
Excellent! I’m glad to hear this was all done correctly!
@sIGNgUY++, Kashmir++ and Iqbal++
This will definitely make a huge difference in the usability of the space.
@rsim, do you have those plugs for the 220V or would you like me to buy some?
Yep we’re good - @garthomite picked a couple up on Sunday, and I’ve restored the laser to 220V operation**.
** - theoretically; hasn’t been plugged in yet.
