SHHH45 Super Happy Hacker House #45 Saturday Dec 7th

I say it’s time. The arcade and jumbotron are in good working condition, Culture Crawl was a hit, the Vodville Theatre has officially debuted with lights flashing, and holiday scheduling chaos will soon claim us but before then, I think we’re overdue for another SHHH.

I’m starting this post out as members only to figure out the format and guage interest. Later I plan to make this public as with other SHHH announcements. Date and time are a bit flexible, please speak up if you have suggestions. Adapting contents from Super Happy Hacker House - April 13! .

I’d like to seriously embrace the lightning talks, ideally with a soft sign-up sheet, coin/reward system, and a large open speaking and seating area. I am making the radical proposal of starting lightning talks at 7:30pm instead of 11pm so that the rest of us family members and daytime workers can join in.

Prior art for inspiration:

Help Wanted

We will need volunteers for the following tasks:

  • Sourcing snacks, food (vegetarian options please!), and (non-alcoholic) drinks
  • Cooking and serving food
  • Liquor license / Special Event Permit. I don’t have training (and I don’t really drink). If we don’t/can’t get a license, as per my reading of the SHHH wiki, we can close down VHS to members and close friends only before drinks are served and it should be fine.
  • Presenters for lightning talks! Set the bar as high or as low as you want. Everything sounds like a fringe idea when compressed to two minutes anyway so have fun!
  • Coins / tokens / mini trophy for lightning talks presenters / winners
  • Games? Competitions? Your ideas for increasing fun and party-appropriate use of the Space

Wat

Open House (3 – 5pm)

Never been to a hack space before? Dying to see the VHS space? This is the perfect time to visit! VHS members will give you a tour around the space, show off some cool projects, and answer any questions you have. Many of our members share an interest in 3D printers, laser cutting, machining, crafting, electronics, robotics, programming, electronic music, and art. We welcome enthusiastic amateurs, or anyone with something interesting to share!

Show and Tell (All day)

Have you made something amazing? Are you in the process of building something that will become amazing? Are you just starting out and want to talk to people about your amazing idea? Come down to VHS and tell us about it. Bring your projects! Want to plan a demo? We can make that happen!

Super Happy Hacker House (6:00pm – Late)

Super Happy Hacker House (SHHH) is a social night where members, friends and guests gather for a social night of conversation, adult beverages, lightning talks, and super happy hacker games.

Lightning talks – (7:30PM).

A lightning talk is VHS’ version of an un-conference, where people do short presentation on any subject that they want. Unlike other presentations at conferences, lightning talks last only a few minutes (2 min or less) and friendly heckling is encouraged. Read a great Georgia Straight article about one of our previous open houses/SHHH!

Where

1601 Venables Street, Vancouver, BC Limited street parking is available just outside the space. Bikes can be parked in our loading bay for the night or locked up on the bike racks outside the front door. This map shows all the parking and amenities around the new space.

Making this public now! Bumping because we’ll need volunteers. @Phillip_Ma has very kindly stepped up to be in charge of serving liquor. We will need others to step up for sourcing, cooking, and serving food.

Some more proposals, please chime in if you have ideas!

  • Lightning talks in front of the Jumbotron (giant LED wall which is currently facing down the length of the Space), with a two-minute countdown displayed behind presenters
  • Potluck food for fun and scalability. Try to bring a shareable food item with you and please clearly list all ingredients in writing
  • Drinks bar in front of the CNC area. We can set Phil up with a separated area behind a table, maybe even a bar stool or two!
  • Tablecloths! For aesthetics and to separate food and drink that sweet and ubiquitous VHS grime

As we get closer, I will start calling on interested people for help as needed.

@Phillip_Ma could you please add this event to the VHS Google calendar?

@timstr I’ve added this to the calendar.

There is a community maintenance day already scheduled for Dec 7 from 10am-5pm. I am not sure if that has a specific organizer/champion so I will leave it up to you to coordinate.

I wholeheartedly support the earlier lightning talks! Not all of us are good at staying up late

Sounds like fun. It’s a busy month, and weekend. Supposedly some pop music concert will be at BC Place…

The Vodville will be showing cat videos that week to commemorate the occasion.

Generally speaking, I like the date. If we so a churn and burn community maintenance day and get wrapped up by 3, the Space will be in good shape for the open house.

Not to mention the hack space got a relatively good deep cleaning from the crawl.

If you have a fun idea, anecdote, pitch, joke, etc that can be compressed into two minutes, please consider signing up for a lightning talk! I’ve started a sign-up sheet here and added some of my own weird projects and ideas, please add yourselves too! Gentle and good-faith heckling will be encouraged
