I’ll help out on the space search committee, but we need to have everyone that goes on the committee to be actively searching & touring this time. I cannot dedicate nearly as much time as I did in the last space search.
I’m pretty sure we’re still going to be restricted to the same parameters for the search - our membership demographic hasn’t changed drastically.
I had assumed so. One day when I have the time and money to spin off the Burnaby Engineering and Technology Alliance (see what I did there) that is where I’ll be setting up shop. 5 minutes walk from a sky train and ample parking. But anyway. …
6 people empowered to make the call. I’m out of work right now and more comfortable stepping g up since last time I didn’t feel enough people knew me to be actively involved. Im going to grab a bite at Lucy’s then make a drive around the currenet location to look for rent signs to call.
@garthomite are you looking into that location or posting for others to look into?
He said it’s going to be really hard to find places cheaper than $10/ft and for what we are doing we are limited to retail and industrial.
He is also looking in to the place on 19 Victoria Dr to see what we can do with this space, he said there could be room to negotiate on some of these prices to help with moving expenses.
I was pretty impressed with Rob, he seems to know his stuff. He’s worked with other non-profits helping them find spaces in the past. He’s going to call me if any other places show up.
only to play devil’s advocate, I know if I lived closer to the space, I’d be more willing to pay for an annual membership. I’d imagine that the demographic of burnaby-ish hackers is currently underrepresented due to similar distance concerns. But that’s a thought for the BoD et al to actually decide on.
also, confirming that $10/sqft is the going rate, even out as far as coquitlam/maple ridge.
I think that’s dependent on availability at the moment, more than comfort - almost anything east of main will be at a very high cost, and most industrial-zoned land in vancouver follows the shorelines, or railways.
Last time we used a Google Map and people placed pins for their location - it was pretty tightly clustered along the skytrain in East Van, and Mt. Pleasant neighbourhoods with most other places only having at most a few people represented iirc.
