The problem with back-ordering is that we would have to order the full current stock - which isn’t an amount that works well for shipping costs. I’ll keep an eye on it for a week or so, see if they seem to be going quickly.
I read their notes. They ended up using a mixture of fiber board and acrylic to achieve the least friction on the facing surfaces that move across each other. We can’t cut fiber board in our laser (without an exception from lcc which I doubt we will get). They mention acrylic on acrylic as not being smooth enough (I guess perhaps because it is distorted a little by the heat of cutting?).
We also need to arrange a group buy of the hardware. I work just near Pacific Fasteners so I can get this on short notice. I’ll wait until we have a prototype first.
acrylic on acrylic is sticky. Even acrylic on Ply would be fine.
Mine not to reason why, but Hobbyking’s stock went up by several units - just enough to get us into the shipping band. I’ve ordered half the servos.
On the question of mdf vs plywood, I’m still curious about bamboo plywood. It seems like it could be polished to be quite smooth, and the 1/8" stuff is 5-ply. Mostly I’m interested because it seems a nice alternative, aesthetically.
Anyone ever use bamboo in a laser cutter, or otherwise have comments about using it in projects instead of fibre board, regular plywood, etc? It costs a lot more but for small projects that isn’t a big deal.
Could we just leave the paper coating on one side or both facing acrylic peices? I’d be worried about it peeling and jamming over time though.
Other half of the servos ordered!
Thanks Jon.
I’ve just put Thursday 5th February at 7pm into the calendar as an electronics build night for the Piccolo. We should have the rest of the pcbs by then and at least some of the servos for testing.

Does this suit you? Please just reply if not otherwise I’ll assume it is ok.
Quick update on the other parts status:
The pcb’s were sent Dec 14, so they should be here before 5 Feb easily. (Unless they’re lost …)
The arduinos were shipped Jan 8, the last bunch took ~3 weeks to arrive, so again they should be in by the 5th, I’ll post when they arrive.
Thanks to everyone for pulling in the parts. I’m excited to get started on
this!
In general I find they take 30 days or so. You should see them any day now.
I will be out of the country from Thursday 5th till the 17th,
I will not be able to run the laser cutter materials part of this build unless we get the laser up in the next week or so. If not, it can wait till I get back or someone else laser capable can run this part of the build…
Sorry guys.
packetbob and funvill have their kits. If you want the parts I have in advance of the build night come on Tuesday night, I’ll be there from say 7 to 9pm.
Hi, I’ll see you at the space at 7:30 pm!
I won’t be there tuesday,
Could you please label and date it and put it in the dropbox.
Do you mind if I hold them until we can meet up?
No problem, I am in no rush at the moment.
