Is there anyone who would like to organize this?
Could be a nice addition to someones resume.

I can take care of this…
Yes, or Cat6

I’m planning on using wired ethernet for all of the tools that will eventually require certification (CNC, laser cutter, 3D printers, etc). Also the door. Also the roof, via the window.
I was expecting to run all of my own, but hey, if you’re offering…
If interested parties are available to meet at the space in the next few days we can decide where to cable everything…
We can also see what cabling parts and pieces we have…
Bob
Awesome!
As far locations that will have permanent PCs:
Then the Nokia benches and central tables should have switches for Arduino/Pi nights.
I’m planning to be at the space Sunday evening, working on getting the laser operational.
Sunday works for me… I’m not a key holder so let me know what time you think you will be around and i will be there…
I am not sure the solidworks desk beside the 3D printers is a good idea.
Because the 3D printers are beside the server rack. Near by are the mill and lathe, the whole area is loud.
We will need a computer near the 3D printers as well, but it should not be the solidworks desk.
I think the solidworks desk should be closer to the common area near the
entrance.
We got a new spool of Cat6? Last time I checked we ran out.
Would be nice to have a network connection at the ARC station or nearby if possible.
Thinking of future opportunities.
The is a box of cat5e with 220 feet left on it
Steve
I’m trying to drop by after work. Going to also try and take an
inventory/map for cable routing/outlets.
@TyIsI you’ll see where Thomas and I temporarily setup the ADSL modem and firewall - have at it.
Steve
I dropped off 120’ of cat5e and a 12 port punch down block. Sitting on the rack.
Steve
Do we have a map of the space as it actually got laid out? Or @TyIsI, did you get a drawing done?
If we post a map here with the plan, I will do some wiring when I make it out to the space (likely Wednesday by the looks of it, maybe tonight depending on how late some other stuff goes)
Is the rack in its final location?
I have a 24 port cat-5 rack mountable patch panel, let me know if it is useful.
My Cabling Proposal:
At this point the ADSl modem and router/AP can be re-located to the shelf. This will keep it up high and out of anyones way in the shop. It will also keep all the network electronics in one spot.
This will give us 18 jacks distributed around the space. I have the plywood, patch panel and bracket. Hopefully I can use the shelf from the rack. Steve has dropped off cable, I have some and I have a cabling contractor friend seeing what he can find me. I’ll purchase the 9 surface mount jack boxes and the Cat 5e jacks to go with it… I probably have enough wire ties and mounting brackets to string the cable. My plan would be to run it along pipes and conduit. If required when/if we ever move it can easily be taken down.
If no one disagrees then I’ll start as soon as I get the wire so it probably won’t be till Sunday…
Any thoughts/comments/etc?
Bob
There is a large electrical panel in the other side of the wall in approximately this area (some of which goes to outlets in our space). Be careful with how it gets mounted!
@packetbob I can get the keystones and surface mount boxes wholesale price from LinHaw if needed.
Steve
@rsim - I’ll use ez-anchors and some drywall glue to affix the plywood. The ez-anchor only penetrates the drywall about 3/4" and holds it till the glue sets. Avoids having to worry about what other electrical or my be lurking in the studs behind…
@SteveRoy - I was going to get everything at LinHaw anyways but it may be difficult for me to get there this week. If it is convenient for you to get the keystones and boxes then that would help. Lets say 20 jacks and 10 double surface mount boxes. If you can’t manage to get there then I’ll try on Friday…
