I suggest that we keep the ADSL modem as close as possible to the Telus Demarcation point and run ethernet from there to the network hub instead. The reason is to keep the noise and attenuation to a minimum on the ADSL line.

@hectorh - The 40 feet or so of Cat5 cable we use to extend the ADSL will have very little overall effect on the existing noise and attenuation of the hundreds/thousands of feet of less than perfect Telus outside plant cabling back to the DSLAM (or whatever they are now called). Probably less than the 20 feet of flat telephone cable it is currently connected with. I feel itās better to have all the electronics in one place rather that distributing it around the place. However we can certainly compare the performance at each of the connections and pick the bestā¦
@packetbob Iāll pick them up tomorrow and bring them down to the space tomorrow evening. Iāll get Cat5e unless you think we really need Cat6. We have approx 340ā of Cat5e solid core.
Steve
@SteveRoy - Cat5e will be fine. I have another 100ā or so of Cat5e in my garage and I hope to get another 1000ā feet or so in various roll ends so we should be fineā¦
Hereās my drawingā¦
Update:
We have almost everything (thanks @SteveRoy for getting the jacks) but the cable and Iām getting an bunch of it on Monday of next weekā¦ So Iāll probably start the work on Sunday (assuming someone can let me in) and then complete the following weekend (again assuming someone can let me in) when I have the rest of the cable.
One thing that would be nice is a small BIX rail frame. I have plenty of BIX rails but not this small frame. Iāll use it to demark the cable run in the boiler room by the Telus demark to pickup the ADSL lineā¦ It looks like this:
Anyone have one kicking around?
Is it possible to make the laser one x2 to allow wiring to the roof?
Or how hard would it be to retrofit it myself when/if I want to?
If itās just a faceplate like AC stuff, Iām cool with doing it later
We will have lost of cable so we can run drops pretty much anywhere someone may want. However there are a few caveats to be aware of:
Actually fiber is quite cheap, I think you can standalone 1g/100m media converters for $50 these days.
If VHS owns a switch that can accept SFPs, I can probably scrounge up a 1000baseSX SFP and media converter but I donāt believe I have a link pair of converters. What equipment is needed on the roof?
Edit: I do have a link pair of 100baseFX converters. VHS would need to source the fibre, but itās fairly cheap.
Keep in mind that if we run fiber to the roof you still need power up there for the media converterā¦ And to power whatever is up thereā¦
Again, this is a long-term goal, nothing I even really care about hammering out the details of just yet.
All permissions, reasonable lightning precautions, etc will be figured out when the time comes.
I donāt believe fibre is worth the pain, because power will be following the same runs.
Solar power project!
Perhaps not, rent is power inclusive - perhaps there is an outlet up there.
Perhaps there is power running through SOMETHING up thereā¦ Tappy tappy.
Perhaps we can make it wind/solar powered and spend an excessive amount of natural resources to make this project green, but I digress.
We have strayed too far off-topic and I would encourage everyone to stick to the topic at hand.
As @Jarrett mentioned, power/network to the roof is a project for another day.
@ktims: Our very big switch (HP5308XL) has a number of SFP ports that we could potentially use to this purpose.
I do believe it is safe to declare the connection to the roof out of scope at this point in time.
I have left some boxes of cable and various other parts to the left of the rack by the 3D printers. All this will get used up to wire the space so it will be gone soon. Iād like to do all the cabling on Sunday (a good part of the day) if there is a keyholder that can get me accessā¦
Yeah I can be there on sunday and give you a hand.
@packetbob Do we need more cable? I have oodles of cat5 I can give the space I think, need to check my storage locker.
What about boxes faceplates and jacks?

Do we have a punchdown tool? Do we have a patch panel? Do we have a label maker? A TON of zapstraps?
I can help pick up this stuff / do the work, but I havenāt been to the space lately to see the status and I donāt know what we have.
I can be a keyholder as well, and help do the install.
