Her Favorite Uncle…
Side one cut
Side two cut
Side three cut
Side four cut
Side five cut
I still need to cut side six.
The first five sides took about ~100 mins of laser time at $1 a min.
More than I was expecting to pay, but $1 a min is the normal rate across Vancouver, Bellingham, Portland, Seattle and San Francisco.
VHS is heavily subsidizing people with their free usage on the laser cutter. @jon is right, We should start charging by min (Reply as new thread if you want to start this conversation again)
Quasimodo?
about the tools, contact Lee Valley’s top guys, they will come up with suggestions for U and Y, I am sure of that!
I got some time to glue some of my blocks together yesterday .
Now comes the sanding, rounding the corners and clean up phase
This is the sanded block. They look a lot better then before.
I made this sanding jig to make it easier to sand several blocks at once.
Next I plan to add a coat of finishing to them to seal in the wood…
What kind of finnishing should I use ? A varnish? what kind?
@Stevemopolis,
I was going to suggest that you apply some glue as well, if it was me or
any of my siblings we would be disassembling the cubes in no time. On
second thought that might not be a bad thing though, they would be easy to
reassemble in the right order, perhaps except for the map faces. It might
be a good idea to add the corresponding letter to each map face in a corner.
Or sharpie it on the back of the map tiles. Cool idea.
@funvill - When choosing a finish, toxicity (or lack of it) is more important than durability given that this is for a young child. While most finishes are non-toxic after they’ve fully cured, which can take weeks or months, for toys and cutting boards I prefer to use beeswax melted into mineral oil which is a completely non-toxic finish and smells really good.
Another good non-toxic finish are Tried & True™ Traditional Finishes which are available at Lee Valley for about the same price as the more toxic finishes you would get at Home Depot. My favourite is their Original Wood Finish. These finishes, like any other finish, will have an odor for a week or so after application.

I lost one of the cubes…
The A block is missing and I don’t have time to recreate it before tomorrow.
Luckily the person that I am giving the blocks to probably won’t notice for a few months that there is a missing block.
those are so cool…
Nicely done!
They are actually a lot bigger than I expected and they look real good!
An update on this project from last year.
8 missing blocks, most of the others have been coloured in with paints. A few of the blocks apparently exploded after being tossed at the walls (more glue next time). No slivers! Favourite block is the F/Fox/Fairy/Flash-light/Fibonacci
What kind of glue did you use?
