Laser cut wooden blocks for my niece

For my niece this year I am planning on making a set of wooden blocks with custom laser cut designs on all the sides of the blocks. 36 blocks in total with 216 faces

I found this post from another hacker that did a similar project with geek content

http://upnotnorth.net/projects/alphabet-blocks/

This one from a designer

I found a few places online where I can order wooden blocks. I am looking for prefinished blocks because I don’t want to spent my entire winter break sanding blocks.

Do you know of a local place where I could get plain wooden blocks?

Each side of the blocks will have a different theme.

Side 1 This is the index for the other sides.
Upper case letters, and 0-9 numbers
A-Z, 0-9

Side 2
A puzzle map of the world with longitude and latitude lines and borders, a few sea monsters to fill in the ocean blocks.

Side 3
Animals that can spelled with the remaining blocks. Words with double of the same letter won’t work, For example a Cat, needs C, A, T and works, Koala or Jaguar both need two “A” and won’t work. Vulture has two “U” and won’t work.

I am struggling to find animals for some of the letters, please feel free to suggest some. I can’t find an animal that starts with X that meets the above rules.

I plan to use the vectors from http://thenounproject.com/ to make the images.

A = Ant
B = Bat
C = Cat
D = Dog
E = Emu
F = Fox

??? I am open to suggestions. ???

Once the design files are done, they will be uploaded to my Github account for anyone else to use if they like. Citation will be provided for all the images that come from The Noun project. Credit for anyone that suggests a image for one of the faces.

Please feel free to make suggestions on the different faces of these cubes.
I will be updating this post as I pick new elements for each face.

Side 5:

D = diffusion equation (either the equation u_t = Du_xx or the picture of it)
I = imaginary numbers (maybe i^2=-1)
J = Julia fractal
K = I’d go more for Klein bottle and maybe instead use the Julia fractal
M = Mobius strip
O = maybe the equation of the circle, or a bunch of different representations (polar, complex, etc)
Q = quadratic equation x = (-b ± sqrt(b^2 - 4ac)/2a
S = sets (an intersection of sets for example)
Y = flux capacitor of course (maybe this is the wrong section…)
Z = Riemann zeta function (the infinite series looks cool)

i = current

Pretty sure a 6-sided shape is called a sextagon, dude

These suggestions came from friends outside of VHS.
Putting them here for reference

I don’t think sextagon is an official name; hexagon is.

Funny, emu and ibex came to mind immediately. For Q, I thought of Quagga (extinct); but it doubly violates the no-two-same-letters requirement.
