Flat pack, CNC odd shaped slot question

My slots on this pylon lantern project aren’t great. I started searching for other peoples designs to learn from, and I found that several have this odd two sized slot designs. In the image below the slot has a larger upper section (Red arrows) and a smaller bottom section (Green arrows) .

Anyone have any idea why they created the slot like this? and what benefit it would provide ?

@funvill, I am going to hazard a guess that the top, wider portion is a clearance fit to allow easy insertion, while the narrower, bottom portion is a light press fit (pressing the tabs down into the slot) to lock the tabs so they are less likely to come apart.

I would expect that it makes assembly much easier, as the alignment of
the tab in the wider part of the slot can be less precise.

After making the hundreds of bookshelves 2 years ago with slots like this
you want the finally assembled joints to be tight which makes initial
insertion difficult so therefore one makes the initial opening wider.
