Bitcoin at the space: a place to discuss

Continuing the discussion from Anyone want to help maintain a bitcoin dispenser(skyhook) for VHS?:

I would love a good discussion, or even a workshop on the inner workings of crypto currencies, and perhaps even some miners!

Yes! I agree. I would be interested in learning more about bitcoin. A workshop would be very cool.

Truth be told, as much as Bitcoin is being ridiculed, I do believe that crypto currencies do have a future, and I would like VHS to have a more active role on the front line.

I joke about VHS becoming a family makerspace, but effectively, it’s starting to become that - nothing more than just a space with tools. Where are all the “l33t” hacks!? I’d love to see VHS rise to an epicentre of pushing the forefront of technology again. Why are we opposed of technology like this?

Make more! Invent more! Adopt more! How can we remove the barriers that make us oppose adoption of something like the Skyhook? Or other potential tools and projects?

We had a really good one at 45W, the place was packed (was when BTC was skyrocketing).

Tom do you remember who put it on?

I could put on a basic one… more or less an intro to bitcoin, opening a wallet, trading, how to mine etc.

I also know the guys at Decentral Vancouver - they host bitcoin workshops and talks all the time. @Cam is one of the Cofounders. Perhaps he’d be interested in helping out or hosting alongside.

Hey guys,

Been meaning to reach out to VHS more for Bitcoin/Crypto related stuff. I co-run a space called decentral vancouver www.decentralvancouver.com we do bimontly intro to bitcoin presentations / dialogues.

Also we have an intro to Ethereum course going now too, which is next level 2.0 stuff.

There are a lot of misconceptions about Bitcoin because people view it strictly as money as they watch the price go up and down. Really the price of bitcoin is a red herring, because the value of blockchain technology is astronomical and can completely reshape how humans organize. Going away from centralized models to decentralized models that are less prone to corruption. Where code is law instead of the words of some guy you don’t know.

We would be more than happy to do a presentation at VHS, or if you guys wanted to come here. I see a lot of synergy between makers and decentralization.

Not sure who I should ask but here’s our email if someone wants to help set something up. info@decentralvancouver.com

Well if there is interest I will get one to VHS, I had posted on IRC a few days ago… and the first responces were from people I have never met, who apparently represent VHS. I know how it goes and that VHS aims to be a decentralized structure - but the last times I have been there I see more and more Maker stuff and less and less up all night crypto the planet stuff, and I know when it comes down to it, its because I am not there todo it my damn self… But I see my original impression is wrong and it just took a little while for more of VHS to see my post. I was disheartened to quickly, maybe its because I havn’t been there for a while so I don’t know what it is really like.

I would love to see more crypto projects at VHS and have donated/“loaned” many 1000s of dollars worth of gear to VHS to that end.

Skyhook seeemed like a natural fit. For now though the one that was in question is going to find a new home at a yoga studio in dtes - they accept bitcoin for all their gear so it was a no brainer. There maybe another available soon if it comes up, Ill try again  .

possibly me.

Thanks @Cam and @DeNomad - if you could do an intro workshop I’m sure we’d get a lot of interest. Please PM me and we’ll figure out a good time and I’ll open the space for the night. Thanks!

That sounds like a better idea, for now.

You kinda caught us at a weird time because of the move, and we had to downsize in ways that some of us aren’t super happy about. We’re a little touchy about introducing new gear into the space at the moment

Your crypto loans are definitely appreciated, I’m about to start setting them up at the new space again to play around some more.
