Access Makeathon & Vancouver Hack Space - Call for volunteers

Hi all, I was contacted by Chad Leaman of the Neil Squire Society, who is hosting a 48 hour makeathon for building assistive technology for disabled persons at the end of this month. (From Friday, January 27, 6 pm Sunday, January 29, 6 pm)

He wants VHS to be a part of it! Here’s the official page, check it out. Maker Mobile is already involved to provide some tools, but VHS can offer our larger space and tools.

Right now, we’re looking for anyone who is interested in helping out on those days, to keep VHS open, and to offer assistance with our tools, and expertise. I’m still flushing out the details with the organizer about how it will work, but I envision teams coming by VHS to use our tools all night, so it might end up being a bit of a hack-a-thon at VHS as well (I certainly wouldn’t mind setting aside a weekend to finish up a bunch of projects)

So, if you’re interested, post here! Happy to answer questions.

I’m out of town until that weekend. Iff I am back in time to help out, I
will, but my exact return time is very uncertain.

That sounds like a great time, you should ask him to reschedule around my
convenience :stuck_out_tongue:

Just a heads up - Simon will have MakerMobile there with two of our 3D
printers available.
Hope to see some cool innovative ideas.

I would design a better eye patch. Probably not used by many people.

Happy to help out where I can, probably late Saturday or Sunday morning.

I’m up for helping out too.

I am serious about the better eye patch.

The things needed are:

  1. dense cotton fabric for comfort and moisture /sweat absorption.
Synthetic fibers tend not to absorb sweat well.

  2. Loops for attaching elastic strap. With loops the elastic strap can be
easily replaced. These always fail in time.

  3. A washable replacement for the cardboard, which is flexible and returns
to shape. I HATE cardboard. It means I can never wash my eye patch no
mater how much it begins to stink from sweat. In hot weather, I can only
get a few days out of an eye patch. In the cold weather I can get up to 3
    months.
My eye patches are one of the things that makes me enjoy the cold weather
and prevents be from enjoying the summer.

This does not effect many people I know, but sweaty eye patches are very
bothersome. Meaning I can’t wear it as long as I should resulting in
significant eye strain and decreased vision.

I WILL be there.

Please suggest or bring cardboard alternatives to try.

Hit slack #access_makeathon for info and live chat about the project. I’ll still be using this page to organize lists and scheduling, which I’ll start soon.

I’m ready to help as well. Count on me for anything.

Hi everyone, thank you for your offers of help! I suspect a lot of teams will need assistance of hacker/makers and your tools to be a success.

Thanks you for those of you that have signed up. I have just sent an email to those that signed up with a schedule of volunteers at VHS according to what you have submitted.

I will be at the Open House tomorrow night, Jan 24 at 7:30 ish if you have any questions.

Chad
