Yarn Loom - Plans + Retrospective

My wife asked for a yarn loom on Etsy. It looked pretty simple, so I offered to make it for her before a trip so she’d have an extra thing to work on while I was gone.

She wanted to buy one of these: https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/193541289/weaving-loom-and-tool-kit-small-save-10

While they look quite nice, and for someone without tools/means I think its a good deal, it certainly seemed expensive to me. Plus the whole shipping from Australia kinda sucks…

So I designed one myself (Fusion360 drawing here):

I used some cedar that I had extra from another project; turns out cedar is much too weak for those little knotches. I was going to make this out of some maple, but that would have cost me about $10-15 in wood; and we fully expect that I’ll need to build a larger one after she learns the basics of weaving.

Included in the Fusion360 drawing is a lasercut pattern I used to overlay on top of the knotches.

The final product can be seen here:

I could have lasercut the screw holes, and that would have saved me a lot of trouble, I ended up drilling too quickly through them and cracked them. You can see my ‘fixes’ for that, but this should work for the first steps of learning.

Cheers!

Great job!

There are many items on Etsy and elsewhere that are “reasonably priced”, until you factor in exchange rates, shipping, and possibly duty fees!

I’ve been researching loom designs instead of weaving. Well, instead of doing my day job actually, so I’m not wasting weaving time doing research.

I hope your wife gets good use out of that loom.
