Workshop Wall?

After talking to some of the people here, I’ll sort of retract my post.

What I meant to say is that I acknowledge that noise is going to be made at the space, but maybe that it’s a good idea to finally get things moving on slaying the dragon that is a wall. There are numerous benefits, while the main downside is the doing it by the book.

Many(?) people use VHS for things they can’t do at home, but my aim with this post was to make it as inclusive/comfortable as possible for those doing stuff on an individual basis that doesn’t involve the use of loud machinery.

@toma has in the past so kindly made the servers less noisy, so why can’t we do that for the workshop.

I’ll do research for permits/etc later tonight despite the fact that I have zero time available, I’ll try to run point on this.

Low cost/other effective solutions are welcome!

The smallest space combined with the flat walls is going to bounce a lot of
the sound around for sure.

While we sort out the permit issue, perhaps there are other steps we can
take to reduce the sound reflection:

From craiglist:

Soundproofing Curtains - $300 (Delta)

Because the space is so small I don’t think a normal wall (drywall, insulation, paint…) will reduce the noise much, or at all. Unless we build a spcific wall for sound Wall Soundproofing | How to Soundproof Your Wall | NetWell or a concrete cinder block wall its not going to make a lick of difference (correct me if I am wrong)

The bunker had a shop wall. The bunker was bigger than this place (The shoebox) and you could still hear the shop every time.

We want to accommodate as many people needs as possible. Maybe instead of a wall we have a schedule for priority of the space.

For example:
Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday are low noise days.
Wednesday, Friday, Saturday are high noise days.

Basicly if you are the only person there, you can do whatever you want. Noisey, low noise. anything.

If you are working on your laptop and someone comes in on a tuesday you can ask them to not run equipment in the shop as you have priority on a low noise day. If you are working on your laptop and someone comes in on a wednesday they get to use the shop as they have priority.

If the laptop worker is fine with letting the shop worker, use the shop on a low noise day that works too.

Note: No matter what there will be at least a plastic sheet wall between the shop and the rest of the space to help reduce (not solve) the dust issue.

“Wednesday, Friday, Saturday are high noise days.”

Hey! Starting the beginning of March VHS-ARC will be meeting in The Mess.
Wednesday, LOW NOISE NIGHT!

Because of the depth of the space sound reflects from floor to ceiling for the entire length of the space (like an actual waveform).

Could we not simply hang some kind of foam sheets or even coraplast as a form of sound baffle?

Just to be clear, I’m not against making noise at the space. I’m saying that we all benefit if we manage the noise better.

We wouldn’t need high/low noise days if we manage the noise in a good way.

Do you have specific suggestions?

Considering I can generally hear our neighbours through the existing walls, I don’t believe a wall that we put up would help very much. Unless we made it multiple feet thick with lots of sound insulation, I don’t know.

In retrospect regarding the specific noise today, we should have taken the items out to the loading bay to cut out. That much jigsawing does make a lot of noise for a long amount of time.

It would also be easier to clean up there.

Like I said, I’ll run point on this and try to come up with cost effective ways.

I’ve already got some possible solutions in mind, but they need research.

Sanest thing/best comprise I’ve heard today. Thank you.

I wonder if “baffles of Damocles” would be of any help?

There where many suggested layouts with most of them specify a wall between
the workshop and the computer electronics area.

It seems reasonable that a sound proof wall is required between the
workshop and the computer electronics area.

We never finished that wall with sound proofing insulation. I have that stuff in my house, I used to be able to hear everything people said in the basement, now I only hear things at the points I couldn’t insulate. It made me sad that we took what we had to the dump but it is quite hard to remove intact and transport.

I think we can put a wall between the benches, if we have enough uprights. Against a wall the benches only take one leg.
We can also attach a shelf above the benches to the wall for more storage space.

How to sound dampen the wide isle way at the end of each bench row?

Or would we extend the wall across so it covers the entire back?

True, a wall between the benches could be extended, I think the door should
be large enough for large projects.

I was at Cook street 2 weeks ago, I am not sure how much has changed since
than.
