Wemos d1 r2 upload challenges?

I have a wemos d1 r2 (v2.1q) that won’t accept uploads from arduino.
The port is correct, the baud is 115200, the board type is “Lolin(wemos) r1 d2 & mini”.
I get “timed out waiting for packet header”.

Also tried board=wemos d1r1, with different upload errors.

Then I swapped to a espduino-32 (hw-729), with similar failures.

swapped USB cables, same results.

If you know the secret to making either of these boards work, please share!

Most ESP boards need to be put into programming mode before uploading. Have you tried disconnecting everything and grounding GPIO0 (pin D3 I think?) before uploading?
