VHS still needs your help!

Todays move was a great success! Thanks to everyone that helped!

  • We got all the pallets into into the temporary storage space, as well as most everything unpalletized
  • We demo’ed the walls + sorted the waste

Things we still need to do:

  • Transport the drywall to the dump
  • Dispose of the wood with nails in it (either take the wood, or take it to the dump).

I’m going to try to deal with some of the wood, but I don’t have a vehicle thats good for dealing with the drywall.

Aftermath:

There was a little more cleanup after this, and that wood pile got stacked to about twice that height.

All of this drywall needs to go to the dump:

And a lot more junk not shown.

@Luke_Closs you have a section of stump leaned up against the pillar, it is a very nice piece of wood.

The wood on the pile is full of nails, and reportedly worth a lot of money when new. We grabbed all of the nail-free stuff, but it’s not worth it for us to take and store this, considering we’re not building another wall of that scale.
Rob and David were planning on chopping it up for firewood.

Why not get a bin for the drywall?

Steve - sounds like a good idea. Do you have time to get quotes and coordinate the delivery/removal? I can help load the bin if its around between the 27th and the 31st; but I don’t have time to try to coordinate or figure anything out before then.

I can’t move the drywall in my SUV however 5’ x 8’ trailers from uhaul are $20/day.

Just need to hunt down my hitch ball mount.

Garth, this will definitely be the cheapest option. A bin will cost us $400 or so me thinks. I’m in for helping but prefer Sat/Sun.

I think we should try free on craiglist, there is like $300 worth of wood here and it’s in good shape.

So that was a good ~17 hours of work yesterday. I’m blown away by the amount of stuff that got moved.

Chris wrote out a quick todo list last night:

General update: 99% of the stuff left in the space is garbage of one sort or another. The remaining TODO list 1) Dispose of the drywall, needs a pickup or similar load to take it to the dump, or some other drywall bin. This has to go to the actual dump in Delta, not the transfer station - they take 1/2 sheet max.

  1. Dispose of the scrap wood. There’s a lot of 2x4’s with nails. Some is in okish condition, some not so much. It can all go do the dump as far as I’m concerned.
  1. Dispose of the pickup truck worth of bagged garbage.
  1. Dispose of the other random scrap.
  1. Take a car load of random odds and ends, mostly tools. Store it until January.
  1. Sweep.
  1. Deal with the bathroom, which has some crap glued to the walls still. Maybe we need to paint this? I have no idea.

I also need a hand grabbing my pallet jack with the help of someone with a truck sometime today.

After that, I am not around to organize any further efforts until January. Someone should step up and take point for the remaining work. There’s not a whole lot, maybe a few hours.

The simplest and fastest way to remove the nails, so that the lumber can be
reused. Is to use bolt cutters to cut the nails off.

We should be able to give the wood away or use bolt cutters to make the
lumber reusable.

Last night we reverse-hammered a bunch from the frames, you just need to
align them roughly straight (crowbar is great for this), hit them a couple
of times and then crowbar to pull them out.

Since people want to build a wall in the new space, have we salvaged the
wood we want to keep?

The bolt cutter approach seems unsafe when you consider that someone will
be cutting that wood, likely with a powered saw.

If we were looking to make a donation of the wood, there are the Habitat
for Humanity ReStores. However, they would likely expect it in usable
condition without nails or screws in it.

Yes, it will probably take a few people most of day to remove the nails by,
roughly straighten them, hammering back, and pulling by crowbar.

It goes pretty quick, but there are a lot of nails.

Anyone down there today? I will bring my claw hammer. My blue crowbar should also be down there still.

I’m still not feeling well (bad cough/cold), so can’t help out today. However, I’ll keep checking the list and can probably come by on Saturday if there is still hammering/nail pulling to be done.

If you (or anyone) who can tow a trailer is available to do dump runs the 27th/28th, I can be available either day to help load/unload.

Sorry you’re not feeling well Inez. Alrightly - I’ll also be in on Saturday.

Happy Holidays everyone.

Ok, I’ll pick up a 5x8 trailer on the 27th and bring it to the space in the morning. Drywall and other garbage I’ll take to the dump, any wood left I’ll take to get recycled.

Before that time if anyone wants to do something at the space they can move all drywall and wood to be disposed in separate piles near the loading bay to make unloading/loading pretty quick (if that hasn’t been done already)

The problem with salvaging the wood is storage, someone needs to pick up the wood and @JohnC needs to be available to store the wood. As I recall the only other day he has free is the 30th so that would require either another trailer rental or someone’s truck. The other issue is we might not even be building a wall

We’re actually really low on storage space - we filled up pretty much all the space available. (PS - we need to downsize some stuff). I don’t think storing the wood in our current location is viable, even if we were to denail it. We’d need someone to store it offsite.

if you want to pick me up on the way, I should be able to help you

I volunteered to house the fume hood until we move into a larger space that we can make use of it, under the impression that it was functional. When I looked last night there were no fans at all. Does anyone know if they were removed/packed separately? As much as I really want VHS to have a functioning fume system for resins, paint, etc, if all it is is a stainless steel box, it is of no use to me or Us, in my opinion, and not worth storing. If anyone remembers packing the fans, please chime in, otherwise I see no point in keeping it.
