We’re running regular SMD build nights at VHS learning to solder SMD project and building something useful in the process. This workshop involves building a usb to serial adapter that can use be used at 5V or 3.3V to talk to raspberry pi, arduino and most other development boards.
The core activity of the workshop will involve hand soldering, depending upon scheduling, a paste dispenser and toaster oven may be available. A moderate amount of experience (or a lot of patience) is required for this build night, the parts are small as is the spacing between the pins on the IC.
It is suggested to bring your own soldering iron and some form of magnification eg. http://www.amazon.com/SE-MH1047L-Illuminated-Multi-Power-Magnifier/dp/B003UCODIA/ (some quantities of each will be available, please come early).
