Today’s speaker had a personal emergency and won’t be able to make it. I’ll be bringing a movie that’s okay to screen publicly, probably The Pirate Bay: AFK, for those that show up. If anyone has any suggestions, please post or bring it on a USB stick. We can vote on which one to watch.
If anyone has a legitimate copy of http://www.revolution-os.com and wants to bring a DVD player, that would be grand!

The Open Access movement seeks to achieve for academia what Open
Source has achieved for the software community. It also faces the same
challenges, including the need to develop a suitable business model. In
this presentation, we review the history of the Open Access movement,
consider the lessons of Open Source that may apply to Open Access, and
suggest how the Open Source community can actively contribute to its
academic kin.
Presented by: Prof. Dave Michelson
Prof. Dave Michelson leads the Radio Science Lab at UBC where his
research interests focus on wireless communications and remote sensing.
He also serves as co-director of the AURORA Connected Vehicle Technology
Testbed, Editor of the Wiley/IEEE Press Series on Vehicular Technology,
and Editor of the IEEE Communications Magazine Feature Series on
Education and Training. A long time proponent of Open Source Software
and a founder of VanLUG, he is equally supportive of recent developments
in Open Access.
What is Open Access? From Wikipedia: Open access (OA) refers
to online research outputs that are free of all restrictions on access
(e.g., access tolls) and free of many restrictions on use (e.g. certain
copyright and license restrictions).
