Using an LED grid with arduino and shift registers

i used some seven segment displays to make a home version of the VHS is open clock, then realized 8 chars * (7 segments + 1 dot) = 256 leds, same as the 8x8 grid. So I made a follow up with just a grid.

I’ve already scheduled the next tutorial for Tomorrow - building a full game of Tetris from two such grids. Includes the PCB design.
