Hey! So, after UBC reached out last year, we now have the offer again, to have UBC students to come in and help optimize the space!
I’m assuming we would like this help, but do people have suggestions on what we’d like them to help with?

Organizing! I’m not sure I’m going to have time in the next month or so to
get the organization project started, but if we can at least get them to
help clean up and start the organization process, that’d be awesomesauce.
These guys had some pretty cool projects at Maker Faire. So something with the high five Bot or get them to build something cool for VHS while letting them use their engineering skills.
Perhaps see if they could put together a fun project that we can use to engage new people walking in off the street?
We could also ask them for input on what they might like to do? This could really turn into a win/win.
They only have 4-6 hours available. So big projects are out of the question.
Hi all,
I’m the staff member helping to organize the student activities and visits. It’s great to hear that you are interested in working with the students. Below is part of the e-mail response that I sent to Ty, have a look, please let me know how you would like to proceed as I would like to confirm projects by the end of tomorrow if possible:
The following activities could be suitable (and multiple teams of 8 students each could be available for over different days to help):
·
Put spacers under the tables so that they’re comfortable to work on with the Nokia chairs.
Suspend the projector from the ceiling at an appropriate and convenient height and location
Seal off the pegboard in between the 3D printers and the workshop
Add machine vision capabilities to High Five Bot and program it to actively return high fives
But I also liked the comment: “get them to build something cool for VHS while letting them use their engineering skills. Perhaps see if they could put together a fun project that we can use to engage new people walking in off the street?” Getting to apply their engineering skills could be useful, but keeping in mind that they’re not the same students that attended the Maker Faire and are only starting out their 2nd year.
I saw your comment about big projects not being suitable, but in the past students have worked on such projects (e.g. building rainwater catchment systems, vertical gardens) - Although each team is only available for 4-6 hours, we have staggered the teams in the past with TA supervision, such that one team starts a project then another team continues it another week with an optional third team coming during another time to finish the project. The TA makes sure that there is continuity and communication between all the groups.
Let me know what you think and whether you would want me to post in the thread directly.
We are running a bit late and I would like to finalize the projects by the end of the week.
Best,
Ara

How about an up-to-date VHS equipment inventory with documentation?
lol, is the purpose of this to get them to do things that no one else here wants to do?
What can you do in VHS in 4-6 hours…
Improve the wiring on the LED wall & fix the wonky pixel?
Hi all,
I think I’ll leave it up to you to decide how best to utilize their time such that you are getting value and that it’s a learning opportunity for the students. For them, being in such a space will be an important part of the experience.
On the logistical side, I would like to confirm projects today, if not by the end of the day, then tomorrow? Please feel free to call my cell: 778 998 0845.
Best,
Ara
FYI I have spoken to Ty, and I am emailing Ara right now to nail down specifics
When are they coming to the space ?
12th and 19th
Is there someone who can come in on Saturday? I had something come up.
I left some lumber at the space that can be used by the UBC kids if needed. Only 16 of them are available, I need the rest for mounting the panes on the roof. If you don’t end up using them I will find a purpose for them. Don’t throw them out.
Also I want my paracord back.
What time on Saturday? I don’t do mornings
12:30pm to 6:30pm.
If you can make it to open up the space for them, much appreciated.
I have obligations on Saturday, so currently, they will be waiting on the
street, looking lost, while we miss out on some much-needed volunteer hours.
If anybody else is available, I can cut them in on the email chain.
They would also like to meet someone at UBC tomorrow (Friday) from 12pm to
1pm to talk about VHS / background on the tasks, although that is short
notice, so it’s reasonable if no one can.
K I can open the space Saturday 12:30 - 6:30.There any plans worked out for what they will be doing?
