Tour Requests: Curious about Vancouver Hackspace? Come check it out!

Hi! I’m new in town and thinking of joining VHS. I’ve visited a couple of times, but would love to talk with someone who works in the woodshop about safety / usage, since most of my (small) projects are wood projects. I have some experience using tools like jointers, planers, table saws, miter saws etc. from previous projects making mini-tables & shelves from scrap wood.

Is there a woodshop maker available to give an introduction during open house today, or next week?

Thanks!

Hi @Jaymez - I am usually in on tuesdays for open house nights so do stop by and say hi! I’m also here right now until 9ish.

Cheers!

Cool! I’ll come say hi!

Hi Vanhack,
I am Canic
I was at your open house on tuesdays and would like to become a member. I have two projects that I am working on, and would love to connect with others with similar projects.

  1. “Arc’teryx” patterned leather jacket:
I have one jacket completed by hand, I would like to make a 2nd with a sewing machine. I would like to ask if anyone is familiar with digitizing clothing patterns or point me in the direction of software that would be useful to me and if there is someone that can supervise/teach/show” how to use the industrial sewing machine without sewing my fingers off. Eventually I want to work up to modifying clothing patterns and using the laser cutter to cut out a 3rd revised jacket.
  2. Modular thermal optic system:
I have the core modules done. Thermal camera, eyepiece, battery, display.
I am having issues with analog video signal degradation, I think I know the cause but it would be nice to share and exchange knowledge on analog video signals. I would also like to ask if there’s anyone that specializes in drones and to pick their brains on how GPS signals and OSD works, along with how to integrate two video signals in fpv drones. If possible I would like to build a drone. Along with drone integration of two video signals also I believe some people are working on a meshtastic network it would be something I would be working towards as well.

Thanks in advance!

Hi All, Happy to e meet you here, we are also interested to explore more about the possibilities, Is it possible to have a tour from the facility this Friday 5th June from 3:45pm Onward? i want to come with my colleague to learn more about the possibility of using the facility for our R&D activities, also check if there is something valuable for kids experience

Hi, I was wondering if our previous message reached the team in charge, we are interested to know more about VHS and would like to have a tour. we will try walk in today around 2pm, hopefully someone can guide us about the activities and possibilities

Hi @totalspace-RandD

The best time to come by for a tour of the space is on a Tuesday evening, any time between 4:30 and 8:30 pm.

Please bear in mind that VHS is a fully volunteer run organization with no paid staff, and operates on a member-volunteer basis rather than a fee-for-service business. If you’re looking for fee-for-service, you might want to look into MakerLabs or FabLab.

As far as activities for children are concerned, members are welcome to bring minor children with them to work on projects, but they may not be able to use certain member-only tools, and must be supervised at all times. There’s a lot of dangerous stuff here, as well as an unsupervised espresso machine and a roll of “for rectal use only” stickers. So it’s for your protection as much as theirs!

Hello, I would love a tour on a Friday or Saturday after June 26th. I am mostly interested in woodworking, but do lots of other crafts as well

Hey Kristen! Can you come for a tour on a tuesday evening? We are open to the public for tours every tuesday and it’s a great time to see the space in action especially if you’re interested in checking out the woodworking areas and talking to woodworkers about how they use the space.

Here’s a link to the calendar showing open house nights on tuesdays Events Calendar - Vancouver Hack Space

If Tuesdays don’t work right now, feel free to post again after June 26th to request a tour and if a member is willing to offer you a tour then they’ll respond. It’s a great space. I think you will enjoy our woodworking shop!

Ok great, thank you

We do open house tours every Tuesday night from 4:30 to 9pm

Hello VHS!

I’m an engineering student at UBC and I’m interested in learning about 3D printing! I have experience with 3D modelling and FDM printing, significantly less so with resin printing. I’m hoping someone would be willing to show me the basic steps around setting up and cleaning a resin print, as well as machine upkeep for both FDM and resin printers. If thats too much effort, no worries, I totally get it! I’d be super happy with just a quick tour and/or a verbal explanation : )

I’m unfortunately working during the Tuesday evening open houses. I’d be available next Monday anytime between 1:30-3:30 pm, Wednesday all day, Thursday after 5:30 pm, Friday after 4 pm, and Saturday all day. Please let me know if these times work for anyone! And again, no worries if not!

I hope everyone’s having a nice Saturday!

Arden

Hi,

I am in the process of learning woodworking with hand tools and starting my first project. Is there some sort of mentorship in the community? Basically I have a few tools, an idea for a project, and started on it but have hit a brick wall in regards with my skills/knowledge.

I live in an apartment and being able to use a space like this would be fantastic.

Hi everyone!

My name is Ketty and I’m a visual artist. I’d love to come for a tour but Tuesday nights are generally hard for me. Is anyone available these times? really appreciate it

  • Oct 11 before 7pm
  • Oct 15 before 11am or between 2-3pm
  • Oct 17 before 1pm

I’m mostly interested in the laser cutter, silkscreen, sewing machine and woodworking. I’ve used laser cutters and woodworking tools elsewhere.

Cheers

Ketty

I will most likely be at VHS at around in the morning on October 11th leaving probably around 1 or 2pm. Go to the backdoor and knock as i’m often in the woodshop and the tools can get quite loud.

Hello all! I’ve just signed up to VHS! I’m originally from Poland and 7 years in Vancouver.

I used to be a member in MakerLabs for several years (with some breaks), but since they sold their CNC metal mill and TIG welder is malfunctioning, there are not many toys left for me.

Will come over on Tuesday with some snacks  and would be cool if someone could give me a tour.

Cheers!

Michal

Plans for my saturday have changed. I’ll likely arrive around noon now.

thanks phillip! to confirm, Oct 11 is this Sunday - will you be there on Saturday or Sunday?
