Myself and a few other guys have been organizing synthesizer meetups around Vancouver. It’s a casual and supportive environment for beginners to play their first set, or experienced people to try something new, with lots of opportunity to share knowledge and talk gear.
For a while I’ve been thinking it would be really fun to put on DIY workshop and was wondering if that’s something the VHS crew would want to collaborate on. I’ve been talking to Filip at CCTV in Victoria who has put on similar workshops and he suggested one for making contact mics.
I suppose an important next step for me would be to come check out the Hackspace and meet a few of you to see if it makes sense to work something out. I’d be happy to come on a Tuesday, but if there’s another time that works better I’m fine with that too.
If you’re interested in checking out our events, the next one will be at Mt. Pleasant Neighbourhood House on Feb 20th at 7pm. Then another at St. Andrew’s church in North Van March 8th.

I need to learn the basics of soldering on a small raspberry pi-size board so I can fix and upgrade my own stuff. the instructions I’m reading online for this say to use paste, flux and a hot air rework station. Are there any relevant workshops coming up that cover this, or people interested in running one?

@Jean_H We have a blinky badge kit that can help you practice your sodering for your project as well as a number of members who can help you out. Come by on a Tuesday evening for a tour of the space and learn a bit more about the community. Depending on who is around maybe you can find some help and get your board upgraded as well.

My name is Robert. I’m a graphic designer by day and a woodworking hobbyist by night. I moved to Vancouver a few months ago and have been searching for a community like VHS. Right now I am particularly interested in:
- Making unique furniture for my two cats
- Improving my leatherwork skills
- Refinishing old tools

Hi @Patrick_McConnell - come on down on Tuesday evenings where we host an open house nights to the public. There are lots of members around to help answer questions you might have about the space.

Hey Patrick. As Phil mentioned you are very welcome to come down on an open night to check the space out! If filming in the space, please ask for permission from nearby individuals before filming them. Some folks are more comfortable with that than others. Thanks for thinking of VHS for a video segment! We are a pretty fun joint and there is lots going on especially on open nights. Cheers

Hi there,
Is it possible someone to give us a tour of the space, it would be great if that person knows little bit more technical side of the stuff like - what tools we have in the space, how much electricity it uses, what requirements may be needed if we want to create in our space (something we think about having in our future office) hence the visit to the lab to get expired and learn.
We are hoping someone can walk us through Wed Oct 8 2-3pm for 30mins. Hope to hear from you, and thank you in advance!!

I’m hoping to tour the space at some point this long weekend, if there is any availability. I’m also available this evening if someone is around. I’m most interested in the wood shop, or any shared spaces where I can use my own tools for small delicate wood projects (dremel, hand saws).
