Swapping two items in the space

The whiteboard behind the front door almost never gets used.
The map of VHS items in the lounge gets used and could get even more use.

What if they swapped places? The whiteboard could be used for discussions and brainstorming more, being not trapped behind the round table. The map would be in a place all visitors would see right away, which might help with introductions to VHS and learning where tools live.

Actually on this point, I would like to update the map pieces to list the name of each bench (A-Q?) Is this ok?

The whiteboard by the front door is also worn out.

Anything written requires a solvent/heavy scrubbing to remove. I’d actually
suggest replacing it entirely.

Sounds reasonable to me, @iMakeRobots. Good call.

I think the purpose of the map was to facilitate experimentation of alternate layouts, so the static arrangement of items on things shouldn’t be depended on. In this context, labeling of the virtual shelves is also not very useful. A printed piece of paper would work just as well, although it feels like the wrong design solution. Maps are useful for visualizing things we cannot see easily, so if we can already see something, there’s no real need for a map of it.

It is not easy to see the names of each bench and learn the physical address system.

Yes, I understand that, but I’m thinking maybe that side of things can be improved. If people don’t realize there are names for each bench, then they’ll never have a reason to look at a map. Larger signs that are unobscured on the benches, or maybe stuck on the ceiling above the benches, I would imagine to be more useful.

The VHS map board is meant for testing layouts without having to move around a whole bunch of heavy stuff. If you want to add the labels you can but as Shane mentioned I’m not sure how much value there is there? Either way, I don’t mind (I’m the one who made the layout board). I would recommend using a label on the pieces or just laser out some new ones.

I can share the laser files if I haven’t already somewhere…

I should add that I think bringing that whiteboard over to the lounge is a good idea. The idea of having the layout board in the lounge was to encourage discussion about the layout too so ideally it would find a place in the lounge area.

FYI that layout board is easy to take off the wall to play with.

The large wall on the east side could be whiteboard, the space between the
arcade cabinet and the TV could be for the map.

Just to re-iterate: that white board by the door is completely worn out.
It’s essentially a white wall now.

If you’re taking it down, you might as well throw it out.

All those for ditching the old whiteboard?

All those opposed?

I liked your idea for the new home, but if it’s as dead as they say then I suppose we may as well toss it. Or maybe this is a good time to try that whiteboard paint?

Do it with a poll, like this (but with square brackets instead of round)

(poll)

  • all those for ditching the old whiteboard
  • all those opposed
    (/poll)

renders as:

  • all those for ditching the old whiteboard
  • all those opposed
