Shenzhen Electronic Market

I might be travelling to Shenzhen in the first week of July and I plan on visiting the Shenzhen Electronic Market.

What should I see?
Does anyone want anything or just lots of pictures of electronics?

Also Shenzhen Electronics Market is HUGE! Does anyone know a good map of the different electronics sections? Or is it too organic and constantly changing?

I wont know for sure whether I am going before the end of the week.

I think this is the documentary that made me want to visit.

Keep in mind I’m the type of person that thinks traveling is a waste of money.

Quote
“The model that they are developing can be quite frightening, for models that have been established and very successful in other parts of the world. I do think that the core tenets of sharing IP, that they have is extremely enabling, it is a cultural change, it will take a while, the future is possible.”

I do know this is true in the supply chain and it is what has made their supply chain so successful. It is the complete opposite of the IP protection companies live by here.

It turned the supply chain into a commodity able to underbid and absorb new technology faster than just about anywhere in the world.

@tdwebste - I’ve been there on 3 trips and I still get completely lost everytime.

Take a look at Scotty Allen’s phone repair videos they give you a feel for it.

I suggest you post a list of what you want to see and I can help guide you a little. I would suggest that it’s not the place to go for bargains, most stuff is moving online and the SZ electronics markets are very gradually becoming malls for new finished products.

I would not expect to ship stuff back, excess baggage is much cheaper (you generally get 2 pieces and an extra piece is like $US50).

If you’re leaving from SZ to fly out of HK or flying into SZ via HK consider taking the direct ferry. It’s not the cheapest route but it is by far the easiest. On departure from SZ you can check your bags at the ferry terminal in Shekou on arrival you take the ferry from the transit zone at HK airport, avoiding entering HK at all.

If you can work out how, it is definitely worth trying to get to the Depu Market in Northern Shenzhen. This is much more industrial/mechanical than HQB. In this video it was hard to get to, they’ve since extended the subway up there. As far as I can tell the chinese name is “深圳市沙井镇德普电子城B座二楼” you take a cab from Shajin metro but this might be old information. Google transit directions seem to work for SZ now but they won’t work while you are there. Unforutunately it says 3hrs from downtown so perhaps it won’t work.

Last time I was in shenzhen, I used downloaded google maps to get me back the subway stations.

This way wifi is enough.

Yes, good tip. I have this book, I took it on my last trip but didn’t use it. Not sure it is worth $US35 but it is a cool resource.
