I spent a couple hours this morning fiddling around with re-levelling out the thickness sander today. Mostly because i needed to run an end grain cutting board through it so i finally got around to addressing it.
Instructions on how to level out the thickness sander are included in the manual for the thickness sander and information can be found here: tool:thickness_sander [Vancouver Hack Space]
Basically there is a belt down below that connects the crank shaft to the 4 posts of the bed of the thickness sander. Disconnecting that belt allows for the adjustment of each of those posts individually. There is a locking screw accessible from the top of the bed that needs to be loosened before the post can be moved up or down. I adjusted the two posts on the right hand side until both sides of the drum were able to spin the drum head freely.
Once i was satisfied with the leveling of the bed i needed to put the belt back on. Stupid me forgot to loosen the belt tensioning wheels that would have saved me 20 minutes trying to get the belt back on the mechanism.
Once the bed was level again i installed a fresh roll of 80 grit sand paper and proceeding sanding my cutting board. The resulting thickness on my cutting board was 38.52 mm on the right hand side and 38.16 mm on the left side over a 27 cm width after both sides were sanded. I think at this point its really about how tightly the sandpaper is wound onto the drum so it’s probably good enough for most VHS woodshop tasks again.
