OttLite Lamp Repair: A Machinist's Journey

Here’s a story about a lamp. Once upon a time there was an OttLite brand adjustable floor lamp that an artist had used for many years while painting pretty pictures that met an unfortunate accident…

The neck joint, that was a bit of a weak point in the original design, gave up and snapped. Initial repair efforts to pin and epoxy things back together failed to last more than a week or two…

So a handsome young newbie machinist thought, “What if a metal replacement for the whole part could be made?” and he set about pretending he knew how to do that…

The design was simplified somewhat, but he thought it might do the trick. Once the part was done, the lamp was reassembled…

And lo, the light did shine again!

The end… for now…?

AMAZING write up and really cool story  !

Can’t wait for a cartoonist to make this into a children’s book for budding hackers :stuck_out_tongue:
