Open The Space on Sunday: SFU Young Innovators Crawl - Volunteers Needed?!

There is a short notice opportunity to have our space featured in the SFU Young Innovators Crawl on Sunday from 12PM - 5PM, but we need some volunteers to be there, show people around and some projects around the space.

It’s an open doors event around the city for ‘Young Innovators’ - They’ll be showcasing places like, Makerlabs, Lululemon Labs, Coworking spaces, Mobify and other startups. Some under 30’s would be needed for us to do this. I can be there at some point as well.

If anyone is around to open the space and do this on SUNDAY from 12-5 PM they would gladly add us to the crawl.

Let me know in the next two hours or so if this is something we want to pursue and if you can be around to help out, show the space, and some projects. If response isn’t resounding I’ll let them know we can’t do it.

Event details here: http://www.sfu.ca/publicsquare/community-summit/2014-summit/young-innovators-crawl.html

Additionally… if there’s any activities people showing up could do, that would be a huge bonus.

I can do 12-3. I’ll put out the quadcopter, some other recent project stuff.
I’m under 30.

That’s awesome Jon. I’ll touch base with you.

Can we get another keyholder or even better, a director to make it out to cover 3-5 or the whole time?

The larger the showing the better - and you don’t need to be under 30 - It’s a nice to have…

Just got another to help out but could really use some more. All you need to do is be around the space, show people around and if you have some cool projects to share - that would be great.

We were just added to their official map and they are putting up our profile now. http://www.sfu.ca/publicsquare/community-summit/2014-summit/young-innovators-crawl/map.html

No crazy expectations here, just need a few people to be in the space from 12-5. Anyone else?

There are going to be hundreds of people doing these crawls - so it’s a good opportunity for VHS and to grow our membership.

I am going to do my best, but I can’t make any commitment

I can pretend that I’m under 30.
I can be there from 3-5 and possibly earlier.

If there are a lot of people coming through, someone better print up lots of waiver forms!
Or will we be making people sign the waiver that day?

Inez

You don’t look a day older than 25, Inez.

Waivers should always be signed.

I’ll try to be awake at some point :stuck_out_tongue:

I have some manikins and some LaTeX human masks, We could make the space look like there is lots of people, being perfectly still.

See innovative. I like it. That’s why we’re on the innovators crawl.

FIXED IT

You cannot read about LaTex human masks while writing LaTex without your concentration being completely shot (probably shouldn’t be checking emails I guess). For bonus points I was listening to the RHCP song from the matrix movie (2?). Maybe Ty and funvill are so proficient at it that they can write human masks with it. Let’s not go to the mankinis.

Thanks to everyone who said they would help out tomorrow. @Jon said he would be there at 11 to open the space, and hopefully another keyholder can make it to close it around 5.

We could always use more bodies and involvement from anyone, so please do try make it so we have a good showing! I’m hoping lots of people come through, but no way of gauging.

I wanted to share the email I got from the organizer at SFU, Maya, so you can get an idea of what is going on and you’re invited to all the below things if you’re helping out!:

Hi to all of you wonderful people,

I am e-mailing you to provide a final check-in before the Young Innovators Crawl tomorrow! This e-mail is stocked full of important information, so stay with me.

Morning Delievery: Stamps, Passports, Balloons, and signage

Tomorrow morning, between 10:30 and 11:30am, our amazing team of volunteers will be coming around to all of the site location, dropping off passports, stamps, Crawl calloons and signage to your sites. They will also help with putting up signage, etc.

We have assigned 2 volunteers to clusters of 2 - 4 sites each, so they will be checking in with you throughout the day, helping with way finding, stamping passports, explaining the Crawl itself, and encouraging “crawlers” to come to the Vancouver Design Nerds Jam (The Innovation Equation) from 5-6:30pm, and the After Party. If you are in need of any other assistance, feel free to let them know.

Our Volunteers will be wearing SFU Public Square T-shirts so they should be easy to recognize.

Just so you are aware, we will also be having Tarah Ferguson, of Tarah Talking Tech visiting a few of the Crawl sites with a camera crew to get some footage and interview some of you guys. As well, our photographer, Marina, will also be visiting some stops along the Crawl to get some beautiful shots of you guys in action, connecting and engaging with the community

Most of your sites have been delivered copies of the Georgia Straight - they have our map on Page 10. If you did not get any Georgia Straights delivered, or there are no GS boxes near your site and you would like some copies, please let me know asap we can get some dropped off to you tomorrow morning.

Survey

As many of you may know, the purpose of the Crawl goes beyond one fun and interactive day. We are also using the event to start a larger conversation around innovation in Vancouver, and are doing some research on the innovation ecosystem in the city and looking into exactly what the barriers that we, as young(ish) people, are facing, and what support is missing.

If you feel so inclined, we would love for you to both fill out the survey, and also pass it on to any other people that may want to give us their feedback.

There is no age limit or definition of innovator that people need to fit into to fill the survey out, rather we would like the perspectives of any young people in Metro Vancouver whose work is shaking things up and shifting the status quo on their needs and experiences. The information collected will be used to inform program development, events, and policy decisions at a local level, as well as to connect young innovators with further opportunities in the community.Your opinions are appreciated, and will be kept strictly confidential. You will find the survey here: Innovation in YVR

Check out and share your online profiles, the map and schedule online

Vancouver Design Nerd Jam
We would love for you to join us at The Innovation Equation, after the Crawl ends from 5:00 - 6:30pm tomorrow. If you need to close your open house a bit earlier to make it to the jam, that is fine by us. If you’ve never been to a VDN idea jam, they are A LOT of fun! More info here: Redirecting...

After Party: 19+ at Fortune Sound Club from 7 - 11pm

Hope to see you all at the After Party! It will feature free, local and delicious food from Nourish, great entertainment from Man UP, dancing, karaoke, drinks and more!

Get those last minute tweets, posts, phone calls, texts, and e-mails out to make sure your friends and family come out tomorrow to support you and your work! If each of you get 8 people to come out and crawl, that means there will be about 8000 people crawling tomorrow… let’s do this! Make sure to use the #YIC2014 has tag tomorrow on social media.

Can’t wait and see you tomorrow!

Thats it. Thanks!

Denny.

This was cool! Great turn out and a great way to get more new people into the space! Thanks for getting this together Denny!

Thanks to everyone that helped out. It was really last minute but at least an opportunity seized. I’ll keep an eye out for others.
