Open Night and Hover Hand Demo

Hi all,

Just wanted to report on Tuesday’s open night. It was quite successful, with several new people getting tours of the space.

We also had a large group from Hover Labs come in to show us their cool products!

The first was their Hover Gesture sensor, which makes use of capacitive sensing to detect gestures.

The second was the Beam, a modular LED matrix (you can see it on the table scrolling out tweets from Trump.)

After the demo, the team was kind enough to leave us with some our very own Hovers and Beams!

Thanks to Jonathan Li and Hover Labs for sharing their work.

Ideas for projects?

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the tour of VHS. We really enjoyed sharing projects with the VHS community.

@robojeremy - All great ideas. Another one I have would be to control lightbulbs, dim with airspin control and change color with left and right swipes.

I’ve been meaning to do a cool Beam project with IFTTT. So the idea is for Beams in all your friend’s homes, maybe above their TV or on their fridge. Send a message through SMS to your friend’s Beam. Some examples messages:

  • Hey, Home in 15 minutes
  • Let’s grab a drink. Pick you up in 10.
Hopefully I can find some time to put this together soon.

@wander If you guys ever hook up that huge LED screen to Hover, I’d love to see it.
Cheers,
Jon

maybe it’s just me but @wander original post has broken links and unsupported MIME types. I’m looking at the post in Firefox.

Images fixed, will fix video later

Update:

Rob M has borrowed one of the Hover sensor boards for experimentation.

I’ve got the other one, and have gone through the first example to set up testing.

Works like a charm; the online instructions are straightforward. Gesture sensing works great!
