I’d like to humbly suggest that continuing to discuss the as-yet poorly defined health risks is counterproductive and won’t convince anyone. I also believe moralizing or attempting to shame people into changing private habits isn’t effective either. The original topic of the thread is, “No smoking at VHS.”
To summarize what I believe to be the relevant points of this discussion:
A) The City of Vancouver has made their position clear in BILL 14 – 2015 - TOBACCO CONTROL AMENDMENT ACT, 2015:
SECTION 7: [Tobacco Control Act, section 2.3] adds prohibitions with respect to the use and holding of vapour products in public places and workplaces, and near the doorways, windows and air intakes of those places.
I’ll also remind people that at the last QGM, this amendment was passed:
B) Several members have expressed in this thread that they have a problem with the use of electronic cigarettes in the space.
C) The two members who are impacted and have spoken up have already very graciously agreed to use their electronic cigarettes outside:
As far as I’m concerned, the courtesy extended by @miststlkr and @toma by agreeing to smoke outside protects VHS and its members through injury from fines and potential health risks. Thanks guys!
Sorry I brought up parenting, I don’t want to discuss highly emotional
non-scientific things.
In other words I respectfully disagree with the best approach to teach
avoidance of addictions.
I think people are looking at it from the perspective of a non-smoker. I’m not trying to get anyone to start using e-cigs. Most people dont’ want it to be cool because they don’t want people to start vaping. But I’m not concerned about those people, they are already heathly. I’m concerned about the unhealthy people, and getting them to stop smoking. Right now e-cigs are probably the most effective way to get people to stop smoking.
The only way to “advertise” and inform people about “the most effective way to stop smoking” is by vaping in public. Infact Health Canada was promoting the use of e-cigs for non smokers until public opinion shifted.
So in a sense what funvill is demanding of me asking us is making it more challenging and creating less of an incentive to quit smoking. All because of what is essentially him lashing out at me a superstitious fear of nicotine.
But thats all fine with me. I can take it outside, having an excuse to do that is half the fun.
