Experiential art is popping up in places like the National Gallery in Ottawa and now the infinity room concept is making its way from the US West Coast. This month an experimental prototype will make its debut at the Deer Lake Gallery in Burnaby. An infinity room installation using recycled mirrors, LED lighting and computer technology will launch visitors into an experience named from the artwork itself, “A Night Walk in Falling Snow.” Sculptor Ron Simmer is building the installation that will open during the Luminescence Show of 2D + 3D light from March 19 to April 9, and in so doing he will create a dazzling optical illusion bringing a new art form to the fore.
Simmer’s art is created to be an interactive physical experience and often incorporates optical illusions using technology to bridge the gap. As he explains, “I hope people who see “Snow Falling” will appreciate its meditative aspect. The infinitely reflecting mirrors are disorienting and give the perception of floating in space.” He adds, “In future I might make an infinity room with strobes, lasers, neon and pulsing LEDs to mimic a hallucinatory experience. Currently, my infinity room experiment is a prototype, not unlike Yayoi Kusama’s famous installations. I have recently visited her work at The Broad in Los Angeles and at the Phoenix Art Museum.”
The expression one person’s waste is another’s treasure also comes into play as Simmer took advantage of the Vancouver Art Gallery’s disposal program to recycle mirror materials that have become the basis for his infinity room installation. The artwork will take Simmer two weeks to construct with the use of not only mirrors, but also LED strips and ten microcomputers to provide the LED effect. As for future plans Simmer adds, “My dream is for a gallery in Vancouver to fund and let me install a complete infinity room, since I have much of the materials at hand.”
The Luminescence Group Exhibition is sponsored by the Burnaby Arts Council as a celebration of the coming of the light, the March 19 equinox.
