Looking to diagnose and repair a dead 4090

Hi everyone,

As this is my first time posting, let me start by sharing a bit about myself. My name is Alex and I’m a Software Engineer by trade. In my spare time (as a new father, it’s limited), I enjoy dabbling in small electronics and 3D printing projects. The latest project I wrapped was a mini server rack which now houses my homelab.

My current project is a little outside of my wheelhouse. A neighbor of mine recently moved away and left me a few of his belongings that he wasn’t able to sell. One was a 4090 that his job had shipped him as part of a new PC, but it was DOA.

I’ve disassembled the card and there doesn’t appear to be any physical damage to the board, and I’m starting to hit the limit of my knowledge on repair. I’ve done my fair share of soldering, but I’ve never worked with surface mount components. If it was simply a capacitor that needed replacement, I could manage, but it seems that’s unlikely.

The next step would be injecting a small amount of current to the rails and checking for hotspots - This is something I’ve not done before, and would love to chat with someone who has done similar repairs.

As a last resort I could sell the card for parts, but with GPU prices where they are today, I thought it would be fun to take a crack at repairing it first.

Hopefully it’s something simple (power connector) and not some random component in the sea of tiny components. We do have everything needed for SMD soldering with an iron as well as a reflow oven.

I’ve never done a graphics card but I have revived a dead thinkpad motherboard by reflowing it in an oven. That was a last ditch effort though before tossing.

Edit: we also have a great LED magnifying scope in the electronics area.

Hi @Zxela,
That looks like a founder’s edition 4090. Those had an informally documented issue with the auxiliary logic chip failure that causes the oscillator to overheat.

Check out this link or rather the video in it. Unfortunately, sourcing that chip might be a challenge without access to another donor board.
