Local VPS providers

TL/DR: I moved my VPS from DigitalOcean to FullHost. My new server is hosted in a datacentre in Vancouver (Renfrew & Grandview area). It’s cheaper, better performance, superb connectivity, and a 2ms ping time from my home and office Telus connections.

Over the past few weeks I subscribed to several Canadian VPS providers, paying full price and fully setting up a server on each one. I put them through their paces (benchmarking, network connectivity investigation, and also interacting with their tech support to gauge their helpfulness and expertise).

Here’s the full writeup:

In it, I also make this offer, which I’ll repeat here in case it’s of interest to anyone.

If you are a Canadian company or individual that is hosting web services with a US provider, I’m offering pro bono consultation to help you figure out your best option to move it to Canada.

Amazing, thanks for this Luke!

This spurred some good discussion over on lobste.rs.

Someone mentioned Free Range Cloud, which looks great. I didn’t learn about them in time to include in my review, but I would recommend anyone here check them out (and report back!).

  • BC Company
  • Very nice VPS offering with locations in quite a few cities
  • Some other interesting services related to peering, BGP and getting your own ARIN allocation.
  • They give off a nice hacker ethic vibe, while still very professional
