Linux Hack Night - Wednesday, November 12th at 5pm

I’m hosting a linux hack night this Wednesday, November 12th at 5pm — 8pm.

Some ideas of what to expect:

  • Bring a device on which you’ve been meaning to install Linux
  • Try out a new distro
  • Show off your existing l33t linux laptop and desktop environment
  • Help each other tune up our systems
  • Not sure about Linux? Come and lurk

*BSD and other OS alternatives welcome too!

Personally, I’m planning on trying out Asahi Linux on a MacBook M1 Pro. I will also bring a Lenovo laptop loaded with Fedora.

Please RSVP below. Non-members are welcome too, but please RSVP.

I would love to look over the shoulder of someone installing Asahi on an M1 MBP! I’ve been following the progress of the project from a distance, but have been hesitant to try it myself.

I’ve been putting off converting an old Thinkpad into a media centre, so I’ll put a copy of Ubuntu on a USB and use this as an impetus to get that off my todo list and explore the VHS some more.

Consider this an RSVP. Thanks for hosting Luke!

I’ll be there - I’ve got Asahi on my M1 but haven’t upgraded it in ages. Thanks Luke!

Heyo! I’ll be there. Have an Arch setup I can show off, but I was also thinking of testing out Omarchy

This is a good reminder for me to clean off my old thinkpad x230 and stick Mint on there. I need to replace the keyboard first. Have the part, it’s just one of those unfinished projects.

Luke what Lenovo laptop are you running Fedora on?

That looks like an interesting distribution

The main one I’m using is a ThinkPad T450s which has been running very well with Fedora KDE Plasma. I’m using this to get my linux apps and workflows all figured out as I transition away from macOS, and then my plan is to run Asahi Linux with KDE Plasma on my MacBook Pro and make it my daily driver.

I also have a T540p and T400 which are older but can still run some linux distros pretty well.

Also somewhat interested in Omarchy and Omakub.

@Janet I just installed Mint on my X230 and have been impressed so far. It even resurrected the fingerprint reader which stopped working on later releases of Xubuntu. My upgraded Intel WiFi 6 card seems to work more reliably on Mint as well.

That’s excellent! I didn’t know about that hack. I’ll check out that upgrade! I still need to fix the bios in order to get 3rd party batteries recognized. I have that Ivybridge downgrade on my to do list as well.

I was a bit scared to mess with the BIOS but this worked for me. YMMV of course!

I’d be interested in hearing how you get on with aftermarket batteries too. My battery is pretty tired at this point.
