LED matrix badge 8x8

We still have Nokia LiIon cell batteries at VHS as far as I know. I have some pcbs for USB LiIon/LiPoly charger [v1.2] : ID 259 : $12.50 : Adafruit Industries, Unique & fun DIY electronics and kits kicking around. The batteries are too big but the price is right.

Now that I actually read your link I want to send some powerboost pcbs off, that is a nice circuit - GitHub - adafruit/Adafruit-PowerBoost-500-Basic-PCB: PCB files for the Adafruit PowerBoost 500 Basic

Prototype built, seems to work well.

I gave two sets of boards to Funvill tonight. I’ll try to make time to add a serial port so I can use the Arduino GUI to program sketches.

Note that this will require a manual reset to download as there is no reset connection to the serial port.

I just got my 8x8 displays…
@TomKeddie - If you need a couple for testing I’ll drop them off (and pick up some anti-static bags)

@packetbob my displays arrived this week too. I’m not home yet, would 8:30pm suit you?

I’ll grab the bags another day… Thanks…

Hey all, I was interested in this but I’ve lost track of what’s happening.

I know I claimed a set of boards, but I don’t know anything else about the current situation.

Do we need to claim parts? Order parts?

@TomKeddie if there are any boards left, I’ll take one too. Thanks!

There is no group buy running at the moment for parts and I don’t have the resources to run one unfortunately. I hope to add the display to my proto for a final verify soon.

I think there are - am passing them on in block of nine so if I am out, someone will have some spares. The cost for 9 is $1.65, hence my reluctance to split them any further.

I’m willing to run a group buy of parts if there is enough interest

@TomKeddie thanks, I did understand I would be buying a block of 9 :slight_smile:

I was waiting on confirmation from @TomKeddie that the BOM we currently have works on the boards we have… If you want to take on the group buy that will help… I’ll probably have 12 or so spare displays to sell also so if the amount of kits requested is under that number we should be good…

The list of people I have are

delivered
@funvill x 2
@packetbob x 2 (?)
@TomKeddie

pending
@wander (or did I get them to you already?)
@ninetynein
@miststlkr
@Janet
@graham

@hectorh you might need to split with someone.

I haven’t done a good job of tracking this one.

No worries if there isn’t a board for me, I would still like to organize the group buy, it will be a good learning experience.

Yep, I’m still in for this. It’s tough for me to get to the hackspace for the next while so I’d prefer to wait until everything is together to grab it.

You can certainly have some of mine!

Ok, this project is not dead, just not at the top of my list.

Seems I have an issue with missing rows & cols in my proto, will have to hand to @packetbob for debug. This is going to suck a little since the micro is under the display. We might want to make a test jig - pogo pins perhaps?

I hacked their code to display all rows and cols.

void prepareDisplay() {
  FOR_ALLROWS {
    disp[r]=0B11111111;
  }
}

ps. the new Arduino version sucks so much less, I just symlinked the boards.txt from github to my sketchbook, restarted the gui and I had new boards.

OK…
I’m going to put in an order to Digikey in order to get the parts to do a test build
If you want in then let me know, but realize that until I do the build there is a slight chance I’m off on one of the parts. YMMV and no backsies. You also must have the PCB ( @TomKeddie may have some left) and a 8x8 LED module.

The parts are split into two groups. The first set (Basic Build) will give you the basic display and may be all you want if you just want a graphics ot text to be displayed). The second set are the additional parts you need to the real time clock if you want it to keep accurate time.

I have included a Right Angle header for the ICSP (In Circuit Serial Programming) as this will also provide a nicer way to power the board but you can do as you please. Note that @TomKeddie has designed the board with pads for the serial port so you can use these to use the normal Arduino style serial port programming if you don’t have a ICSP device but you will need to attach wires to these to make use of them.

Again I’ve not yet put together one of these so I’m not 100% sure these parts are correct. You may want to wait till I have one working…

Anyways I’ll put the order in probably Wednesday…

I also think I have 10 of the LED displays extra so if you are interested I’ll sell them for $3.50 each…

I’m also not sure of a decent battery pack for these. I was thinking of using a Adafruit booster/Charger to get the 5V out of a single Lipo (mebbe a Blackberry battery)…

Thanks @packetbob !

I’ve got nine (9) boards which I don’t think I’ve picked up from @TomKeddie.

I’d like to order all the parts (multiplied times nine) and 9 of the displays you offered to sell.

I’m pretty excited by this build!

Thank you @packetbob

I also will take 9x of everything just like @wander

I will take 9x of these too, but I don’t want to take them all instead if other people want some so 3 for sure and if no one else wants them i will take the rest.

Thanks !

@packetbob I have tons of these switches in long and short shaft, 5c each.

eg. Page Not Found - Aliexpress.com

I will leave a set for you without 3528 caps out back where the toaster oven was. I’m including all my spare caps as I don’t have time to go through them, there will be something you can use in there. The caps are on the p/s so you can use any value, I used 0.1uF for the 0805, have included a strip of these - the vhs part collection has a reel I think.

There might be some header at vhs you guys can use or it might be cheaper to buy a long one and cut it up. A third possibility would be a pogo pin jig for no soldering.

eg. SMD May - programming jig - Vancouver Hack Space

@packetbob Lululemon bag in basket on the front of the bike.

If you can replace the parts in the order that would be cool, then I’ll have one for each kid.
