Do we have a sewing machine at VHS with the capability to make patches with iron on backings (or so I can add the iron on part after)?
Hi
Neat Idea! We should have create your own patch sewing party!
Sounds like you might use some kind of medium weight fusible interfacing
The VHS sewing machines are not capable of doing embroidery but they are good for everything else.
Also this how to make your own patches looks interesting

As @Majicj said, we don’t have any “automatic” embroidery machines at VHS. Those things are very expensive!!! However, with a steady hand, you can do “free-motion embroidery” on most sewing machines.
I think the Janome machine in the black bag has a free-motion foot.
It’s definitely more work than letting the machine do the embroidery, but it is an option.

ok thanks @InezG any info is great!
Another option is to screen print a design, then make those into patches. Do we still have the screen print stuff?
I just found a good video about making custom embroidery patches that you can iron on. The first half shows hand-embroidery, but starting at about 8 minutes, she shows how to use the sewing machine to make the patches.
cool @InezG ok I’ll check that out too! Also had another thought, what if I tried laser cutting different layers of fabric (assuming it’s on the A-OK-for-the-laser-list) in a fashion similar to @mike’s thought about screen printing, so starting with the base layer and then layering a couple colors on top… without getting too thick of course but it could give a cool look, different than a traditional patch but still fun and useful? I’m think of little patches of old Nintendo characters like even 8-bit looking characters ![]()
even making some two tone ones out of scrap leather bits could be cool?? hmmmm, creative floodgates opening up, thanks you guys!
Is anyone thinking if crowdsourcing an embroidery machine for the space? I’d definitely use it.
I would as well. I’ve been keeping an eye out for a used one for myself
