Hi hi! I’m JJ. I just finished my undergrad + recently moved off-campus to the city proper, so – under the misconception that I’m going to have spare time now – I’ve gone and signed up for a VHS membership. I’ve come by for an open house or two and a combat robotics night (and also briefly last Sunday) but no more than two or three times so far. Excited to come by more frequently and hang out and work on various projects and participate in the community!
I was a member of my town’s local makerspace growing up (through late middle school / high school / really up until COVID), so I’m quite excited to rejoin a similar sort of space. I mostly dabbled in 3d printers / laser cutters back then – still like both (I’ve since picked up a 3d printer of my own) but I suspect I’ll mostly be in the space to learn about electronics. I don’t know anything about electronics! Have always been scared of shorting out components and needing to buy new ones – by contrast, I can write all the bad code I want without it blowing up my computer, so I spent a lot more time doing that as a child. Now, though, as an adult (and after realising that electronics are cheap), I’m ready to give circuit tinkering a go again.
There’s a bunch of other stuff I’m interested in learning / doing / making too: I’m not HAM certified nor know anything about radio but I have a pair of Baofengs I bought off my friend a couple months back; I’ve got a quadcopter project that’s been in a state of disrepair for years and have been looking closely at another cool design recently (that builds around a single 18650 battery / battery frame; I have a wooden (3d-printed!) chess set laying around that I need to sand down + finish + stick weights in; I’ve been working on designs for a tileset for this hidden-information card game I love to play w/ friends called Hanabi; and I have some electronics + a blind chain + absolutely no other progress on an Arduino drawbot.
I’m employed as a linguist this summer (no job for the fall yet
) and am otherwise a big linguistics / math / programming languages nerd (huge fan of Scheme / Rust / Lean / etc). Always down to chat about anything above or whatever else when around the space! (Or on here or on the IRC – Slack’s not quite my thing, though.)
