Getting some plastic lazer cut. How reasonable is this quote?

I’m trying to get some acrylic or lexan cut on a lazer cutter and am wondering if the quote I got is reasonable.

I got a quote of ~$300 from Peregrine Plastics for 20 pcs of 3/16" lexan equalling ~5 sqr ft. Is this reasonable? How much cheaper would acrylic be?

If it is not reasonable, can someone recommend somewhere else in the Vancouver/Burnaby area?

Thank you.

Daniel

How detailed is the cutting? I just bought a 72” x 96” sheet of lexan from Sabic for $180 plus tax saw cutting is free.

Maker Labs charges 1.5$ per minute for non members and $1 for members. They can do lexan or acrylic. it depends on the complexity of the design.

Does that include programming time? And what size sheet are they capable of putting on their laser?

The quote includes machine set-up and I am not sure if they have to do multiple machine loads. None of the pieces exceed 1’x1’ so they should fit on a bed the size of the cutter at VHS.

The pieces are fairly simple (basically square) but do require a !table-saw to cut.

Assuming the material is the same cost as what Big_Mak bought ($3.75/sqr ft) the material should cost $18.75. Pad that by 100% for mark-up and waste, material cost is $38.

Assuming the pieces are rectangular and all the same size, they will have an area of 0.025sqr meters and a perimeter of 63.2cm. The total tool path is 12640mm. Assuming the cut speed is 25mm/sec, the cut time will be 500 seconds (~8.5 min). If the laser cost/min is $3 the cut cost will be $26, which is $52 with padding.

If we allow for an additional charge of $100 for set-up fees and taxes and stuff, the bill should be ~$190.

you could alternatively procure the material yourself from IPP, and try different laser cutting places. But from the sounds of it makerlabs will be your best bet
