General question about broken phones

Hey guys,

So long story short, I have 2 “newish” but very broken phones…and one old but functional phone.

My objective is to have a phone available that I can process payments with. (I’m using the Square App for now)

The two new phones are “Square” compatible (Android Droid MAXX, and Iphone 4S)

However, the touchscreen to the Android is completely severed…and the screen of the iPhone 4S has serious water damage.

Plus, both the batteries are almost dead.

So based on the assumption that you guys are used to hacking your phones in order to prolong them… I’m wondering if you might know where I can find spare touch-screens so I can try to replace the screens?

Or would you perhaps know of where I could best find a cheap, operational phone?

Also, is there a way to hack my old functional phone so that it can take square? (I’m pretty sure it’s an iPhone 3)

Any feedback would be great!

Hey Alex - I’m an android person so not sure about the iphone (although it says square does not support 3 so you’re probably out of luck there).

You could replace the battery and the screen/digitizer (just google for parts) on the iphone 4s but since you also need a battery it may be better to pick up the cheapest working phone you can find on this list.

FYI I use square on an old nexus 7 tablet - works great.

Nexus 7 2013 edition yes. It does not work on the original model Nexus 7. BTDT.

Square works fine on old android devices but getting updates to the OS to continue to have it supported can be problematic. Still works on my htc g2 running android 2.3 though i can’t imagine that’ll continue much longer.

I bought a Cubot rainbow for < $100. Large hi resolution screen, 32G memory. For running apps and cellular calls it was indistinguishible from my previous LG and Motorolas. Only GPS was subpar.
Thats only slight more than you’d pay for a replacement screen especially if you factor
in the cost of having it professionally (i.e properly) installed.
I imagine you’d have to make specific inquiries about the type of USB support the phone has …if you’re plugging in some special hardware ?
