Further update on COVID-19 (Novel Coronavirus)

Hello VHS’ers,

First of all we’d like to thank our community for their support in these uncertain times. As the situation surrounding COVID-19 has developed, we have made the difficult decision to cancel our regularly scheduled open houses for the remainder of March, after which we will reassess the situation. The hackspace continues to be open for regular members.

As always, the most reliable and up-to-date sources of information are trustworthy public health authorities such as:

Symptoms of COVID-19 include: coughing, fever, difficulty breathing, and fatigue.

If you’re worried you may be infected, or have recently travelled to a site that has been affected, please stay home and call your doctor or dial 8-1-1 to talk to a nurse.

At the moment the best advice we can give our community is for people to continue to follow the recommendations of public health officials:

  • Wash your hands regularly, using soap and water or alcohol swabs.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your elbow when sneezing or coughing.
  • Avoid touching your mouth or face with unwashed hands.
  • Regularly clean shared workspaces and tools.
  • Do not share food, drinks, utensils, etc.

Here’s an update from MakerLabs:

Dear Makers,

As a space that is open to the public, uses shared tools, and holds events, we are taking precautionary measures to keep our community healthy. Effective immediately, we are taking the following actions:

  1. Everyone is required to wash their hands upon arrival, before working and eating.

  2. All events are postponed for the time being. This includes tomorrow’s Pie Day, the Women’s Maker Meet-up, our 6th Birthday Party, Family Dinners, and Ladies night.

  3. We will be posting signage about proper hand-washing techniques.

  4. Maintaining social distance (arms-length), with the exception of tool instruction that requires hands-on support by instructors.

  5. Wiping down and sanitizing all surfaces (work tables, desks, bathroom fixtures, door knobs), safety equipment, and respective tools for each class before and after the class.

  6. Asking members who have travelled abroad to stay away from MakerLabs for 14 days and anyone who feels ill to stay home.

As of now, our classes are continuing as scheduled, and we will follow recommendations from the government and local agencies as they are announced. Anyone who feels unwell and is not able to attend a class is eligible for a refund, as long as we receive notice before the class starts. In the event that we decide to cancel any classes, refunds will be granted to all registered participants.

Thank you for your cooperation as we try and keep our community safe and healthy.

Does this mean the space will be closed Tuesday from 7:30-10:30, or open but to members only?

Yes, on Tuesday the space will be closed to the general public but open to members. We are continuing to monitor the Current virus situation and that may well change, but we will alert the membership of any changes here on the talk forums and on slack.
