At the viewing of the new space on the weekend, this is very close to what was being discussed as the (roughly) correct layout, once people had seen the space in person, location of sprinklers, etc. Obviously we have not reached a decision on how to partition off the workshop yet, but I think this is a solid base to build from and can be adapted to whatever partitioning solution we choose.
Something that isn’t in this layout but was being discussed, was to mount the craft table surface on a wall, fold-down style. I’m not sure how necessary that is, as it does fit in the layout - but it’s certainly an idea.
Layout (right-click to view the full image… can’t link it in Discourse for some reason):
I don’t want to derail the layout discussion, but I thought I’d throw this in:
The disadvantage of putting the craft table surface on the wall is that you wouldn’t be able to access both sides of it. I know, the full surface wasn’t getting much use (by sewists or crafters) shoved up against the wall at the bunker either!
If we mount the surface on the wall, what does the actual table get used for?
I think the craft table has 3 sides free? its right next to the folding tables. It has a similar color code to the workshop table, which only has 1 side free.
Can you please overlay a grid on this map so I can tell how may feet are between items? It looks like there isn’t enough room to walk past someone at a center table, and no room to reach a couch if a kid is playing at the MAME machine.
If Sebastian(My Middle Son) is playing on the machine feel free to body check him out of the way, or blast him with the free candy air horn! he deserves it!
@funvill, @jon, @wander, @WilliamB and I (sorry if I missed anyone) spent time last night at the open night laying down tape and figuring out the layout. We started with the layout above in this post and discovered a few profound things:
the scales, either the build or the equipment in the layout drawings are off… by quite a bit.
putting up a full wall makes the space feel very small. More importantly we realized there are only a few items that benefit from being enclosed (e.g. laser cutter) and in the case of the shop the machine tools. This layout presents the idea of a Machine Room
Doing a Machine Room just feels right when you’re in the space, but the practical reasons are there too:
intentionally isolates only the tools that benefit from it
keeps the hand tools more accessible
more openness in the space makes it more flexible (e.g. large projects)
easier access control for the tools that require training
there is plenty of space in the Machine Room cube for those tools and to comfortably and safely use them
A few more general notes:
I added a water cooler, I think this is something we definitely need to put there
right a the front entrance in front of the admin desk is where we’d put the metal bench from science world ( I forgot to put that in the layout). It’d serve as a nice welcome desk
@jon & @funvill may have some more comments about this layout
Photos of the space with the tape to help visualize the actual space we have and this layout:
It’s possible to trim a small amount from the back corners of the Nokia desktops. This allows the desktop to be mounted about 4" back in the frame (the thickness of the uprights). Oddly, there are even mounting holes pre-drilled in the supports that make this easy to do. Of course, this only works when the nokia benches are against a wall, not when they are doubled up back to back.
The main feature of (tape) layout that I really like is that when you enter the space there is a long column of open space that can be used as flex space. Class room, workshop, SHHH, etc… Everything that is in that space can be moved out when necessary as its not heavy.
The machine shop is only for the large equipment (CNC, Mill, lathe), while most of the rest of the tools will be out side of this space. If you use a tool you will need to take it out of the machine shop. use it in the general area, and put it back when you are done.
I expect this layout to change. I just hope we can agree on the large heavy hard to move stuff before we move in. CNC, Mill, lathe, nokia desks… Everything else we can move as needed.
For thing that are movable we should put down some semi-permanent mark on the floor so those items can be moved back into the “right” spot. Basically pegboard with tool outlines for furnature.
I hope you use some really good tape. they will get scuffed, scraped, ripped, and torn, leaving behind a sticky residue that grows into low-rent housing for the dust bunnies.
Is there a reason why the server is in the middle of the room? Nokia desk/s would be a better item there yeah?
Also what are we planning on putting down on the nokia tables down next to the laser? We could potentially need that space for the laser/shop filter.
That’s a pretty small space for a workshop, looks like it’s going to be no room to work… work bench is going to be covered with the ban saw, drill press, vice.
I think we have more nokia desks from memory too.
I guess we just don’t have enough room all round
Could we rotate the top admin desk and put another one next to it?
There are more nokia desks unassembled but I think we’re running short on the feet. At the bunker, all the desks were against the wall so only used two feet per upright, now we’ve got a long double row which uses four per upright. Or maybe (hopefully) there are more hidden somewhere that I couldn’t find.
It was proposed that the 3D printing area go on the desk at the rear near the laser but I’m certainly not stuck to it. As long as there is a bench for 3D printing, it can be anywhere except in the bathroom.
