Dupont connector crimper

Do we have a dupot crimper in the space someplace? I found a crimper that appears to do dupont, but it crushes everything I do. Perhaps I’m using it wrong?

I have one at home that also crushed everything until I realized it has another side. Try crimping on the side with 2 valleys and 3 teeth (the lower jaw, if you will).
I never really saw there were 5 spots to crimp. but I also found that the one in the space, while not as mechanical as the one I have at home worked better because it didn’t have the ratcheting aspect of it.

Hope that helps

This is a decent video on the process: https://youtu.be/K7Qb3DzIX3s?t=49s

I’m still excellent at crushing those little connectors even with the right tool. :stuck_out_tongue:

I can’t wrap my mind around how it would work at all with that crimper to be honest. Based on the video (which I had already viewed earlier today, thanks @rism) and the tools that people indicate can crimp these dupont ends… It doesn’t look like it has the right shape to me. It bends the wire holder flaps the wrong way regardless of orientation from each side.

Yeah check that the crimper is the correct one. there are dozens of different sizes. I don’t know the specs off the top of my head.

I know the tool, but the only one I could find on the bench was far to large for the duponts 1mm. I may end up going to Lee’s to buy the right tool.

Helps to have the right tool… Works exactly how I would expect it too. Perhaps we have one at the space but it is misplaced?

So I’ve been practicing the crimping for a bit, watched the video and made the best crimp of my life with these connectors.

I have since used up all of my male ends, and can say I can successfully crimp these all the time.

The video is a perfect example. I have been using the ratchet crimper.

@interlock, have you had any success?

Ya, I’ve managed to crimp all the female dupont headers except one. My only complaints is the JST female pins I got appear to be 0.1mm smaller than the header requires so they fit loose on the male ends. Works, but I’ll likely revisit after I order some appropriate replacement ends from aliexpress.

Does anyone have a spec (or link or model #) for a crimper that does work with these?

Lee's sells a decent one for about $60.  It has red handles and is made in Japan.  You can probably find cheaper ones, but I have a set of the ones I mentioned and they work great.  Let me know if you'd like to borrow them.

So I had a crimper that I thought was doing a good job but now discover it has put too much pressure on the insulation side of the connector and wires are starting to break once flexed a bit…

In looking at various google searches I find two different crimpers recommended (but both also have complaints saying they are crappy).

I really only need the crimper for the Dupont style connectors. Anyone have experience with a crimper that does work and hopefully a link to where it can be bought in Canada, that is in stock and can deliver quickly (ok… getting greedy on the last few)

I buy them pre crimped and cut/extend as needed. I’ve never been able to do a decent job of these. To make short (up to 40cm) cables you can buy the 40 way individual ribbon connectors, remove the single heads and replace with what you want. They come in MM, MF and FF. For longer jobs I buy single ended connectors.

I have supplies of backshells in all sizes ranging from 1x2 to 2x6.

Thanks for the offer but I will continue my quest for a decent crimper.
The one I need will have a stepped die so that it crimps the insulated portion differently than the bare wire. One of the crimpers I do have is this:

It has different sized crimps (so you would need to crimp each connection twice) but it is too wide to make the separate crimps on the dupont style connector.

I have this one that I purchased from lees. It has a yellow handle and a stepped die (although you can’t tell from the photo).

It’s nothing fancy, but I have made many good crimps with it. With very fine wire there is still a risk of overcrimping it though.

You’re welcome to try it out sometime at VHS.

Nice find, price is good too - $US32.56 shipped on Ali.

How about this one https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00DHCRVSC In stock, will deliver overnight, cheap $21, and it has the stepped crimps for the insulated/bare sides
