DIY Chromecast?

I have a linux-based HTPC running MythTV with bluetooth, wifi, etc hooked up to my TV and it seems incredibly odd to me that I can’t seem to find a functioning way to screencast from my phone to the computer. I’ve seen Yatse used on an XBMC machine but can’t seem to find anything similar. I’ve been using MythTV for so long I honestly don’t even remember WHY I picked it over XBMC but it has very high WAF so I’d prefer to stay with it.

Intel WiDi maybe, not sure of the Linux support as I retired my mythtv box a
few years ago.

This article is interesting

particularly this comment on page 2

I've read that the recent Push2TV boxes are also DLNA renderers.

So, you should be able to use normal DLNA to stream to the box, right?
(easier to stream to TV but I'm assuming you don't have a "Smart" TV).

If the box/TV can handle DLNA then I'd suggest MediaTomb, which is fantastic
and perhaps Upnp AV Control Point (which allows you to push from PC rather
than pull from TV.

I've got Widi on my laptop, but TV doesn't support it hence I use DLNA.

Though, is your myth box in the same room? If not why not just setup a simple
frontend attached to the tv over regular wifi. One of those stick linux
computers should do the trick. I do remember seeing discussion about doing
exactly this late last year on the mythtv list.

Back in the day, I used the Hauppauge MediaMVP running mvpmc

http://www.mvpmc.org/

as the frontend attached to the tv’s, streaming over wifi, worked pretty
well.

The Myth box is in the living room. I’ll have a look into WiDi when I get a sec, thanks.

Also looking into the Roku stick perhaps

Can’t speak to the Roku stick, but the Roku3’s support DLNA just fine. I’ve
used that to play stuff from my PogoPlug

or Plex (using the Plex channel)

What about using leapcast, the “chromecast emulation app for any device”

Digging up this thread : any recent view on chromecast alternatives?

Context? Mobile os?

I noticed that the clockwork mod folks have some Android apps for that kind of functionality. Roku devices have some capabilities for this.

Not on my end, no. I did switch from MythTV to Kodi, which is the “new” rebrand for XBMC a while back and have a Chrome plugin called “play to Kodi” which lets me play a file or enque it from my desktop, and an android app called Yatse which acts as a remote control and allows me to use the “share” function to play videos to it, such as in the YouTube app. Effectively it works. it’s not seamless, but it works “good enough”

Thanks for the quick replies!
I got a Dell Ultrasharp U2415 and would love to make playing movies easier than having to hook up my Macbook with 2 cables and have it stuck to the desk. But it seems the 16/10 ratio won’t work with Chromecast (stretched image). I could not find much info about that…

If you’re on a Mac, is AirPlay an option? I use the open source Shairport-Sync on a raspberry pi and it works wonderfully, but is audio-only. Apparently XBMC has an AirPlay video receiver baked in, so you can stream audio or video from your iOS phone, Mac, or any other software that supports AirPlay. There are dozens of other options.

Get a Roku4., setup Plex server on a machine on the lan, install Roku Plex
client, and Plex client for Mobile = done

Another option would be a Slingbox paired along with a Roku.

Videostream plugin for chromecast

Maybe I’m thinking too complicated with Chromecast. Do you know if a wireless HDMI transmitter is a good option to just replace the cables?
Like this: https://www.amazon.ca/Full-HD-AnyCast-Wireless-Chromecast-Airplay/dp/B01H5LZ0YC/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1484499008&sr=8-12&keywords=wireless+hdmi

Why do you not want to use Google Chromecast?

It seems it won’t handle the 16/10 ratio, so you get a shitty stretched image

Isn’t there a hardware solution that just creates a wireless HDMI connection? I don’t care about all the actual chromecasting ability, I just want to make my monitor connection wireless. Impossible?

Yes, Wireless HDMI is a thing, though not really standardized and of varying quality. The range is usually fairly short but it does work. It is much more expensive than Chromecast, mind you.

Thank you, good to know
