Building a Furnace

Continuing the discussion from Does anyone know about casting iron jewlery?:

I would like to make either or both … but …

The project seems simple enough that I think it’s doable on a Saturday. However, I am concerned about safety. Obviously we can’t operate it inside the space. The loading bay may be an option, but it is still an enclosed space that would allow fumes/smoke to accumulate.

I think we should leave this project until we have a location that is better suited for the high-heat, smoke and fumes production of a furnace.

We’ve got plenty of big box fans - with the garage door open I don’t think fumes/smoke will be an issue. We’ve melted plastic/wax, and silver-soldered (i.e. propane torch, flux, and molten metal) in there before without any issues with fumes (and not even bothering with fans).
