Bringing in equipment?

Hey folks! I just signed up and am looking forward to finally getting some projects done!

I have a question, I own a 3D resin printer but have nowhere to set it up. Can I bring it in and use it at the space?

@dkHackNow What model of resin printer do you have? We currently have 3 in the space and these are all any cubics. The 3d printing committee is partial to stay with any cubic at the time but if yours is an upgrade we might be able to relocate one of the existing printers.

Welcome to VHS @dkHackNow!

In case it wasn’t clear, the expectation is that if equipment is being stored at VHS (and not stored in a personal bin when not in use) then it should be available for all members to use, with appropriate training. This is simply because we have a lot of members (just shy of 200) and not a lot of space.

No hard feelings at all if you’re not wanting your equipment to become communal. The alternatives are to use VHS’s resin printers as Philip mentioned, or take your printer home when your print is finished.

Looking forward to seeing what you make! :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks for the replies. I have an Elgoo MARS 4 Max and I actually should have been more accurate myself. My intention is not to store the equipment (or relocate any existing setups) at the HackSpace, only to use it at the space while I am present and then take it with me when I leave. I have the equipment but live in a small apartment and have no where viable to set it up.

Since nobody else has said so… I think that’s totally fine! (If I’m wrong, someone will correct me)

Thanks for asking!

Please check first with the paint room committee or the 3d printing folks. Best way to do that is to post on slack. Due to fumes the printer would need to be used in the paint room and space is quite limited in there and controlled by committees. There are also inhouse resin printers there that I’m sure you’d be very welcome to use. Thanks for asking in advance and looking forward to seeing what you make.

thanks for the replies, is there a link to get into this slack?

For sure. If you login to membership.vanhack.ca, in the left hand nav, click on ‘get involved’. That will take you to a section where you can request a slack invite. Slack is great and very active. There are channels for 3dprinting and lots of other areas of interest. If you run into any issues with requesting an invite please DM me and I’ll get you sorted. Cheers!

do you mean this? Membership - Vancouver Hack Space

and if so I’m not sure I follow. I have to pay the $75 to access the slack?

Yes, slack is one of the perks of membership as well as unlimited space/tool access. If you’re wanting to bring in a printer in on Tuesday public open nights to use at VHS while you’re here I can pass on this thread to the 3d printing folks for you. Is that what you were thinking? Edit: I’ve posted this in the relevant slack channel.

3D printing and Paint and mess room committee hat on.

Just for some context at a glance the existing M3 max prints at a higher resolution than your Elgoo on top of having a larger print bed size. It’s up to you if you want to bring your’s in but the one in the shop is always an option without having to shuffle your printer in and out of the space.

That being said if you are bringing in your resin printer for use please be sure to use it within the paint and mess room. Its obviously setup for resin printing to begin with. You should also ensure printing in that space doesn’t impede other members from using and sharing the space as well. So long as you aren’t leaving your printer behind with a finished prints on the bed still we do not think this will be an issue.

As an aside - when i first joined VHS i would bring in my own lunchbox planer and benchtop jointer. It was a huge pain in the butt. But once i got setup and trained on the awesome tools in the shop i was able to sell those tools for pretty much what i paid for them.

Just to clarify - do you have to be a paying VHS member to use the inhouse resin printers? I believe the intent here is to visit the space on Tuesday public open nights rather than signing up for a membership ( at least initially).

As i understand it tools that would require training typically require you to be a member or in the very least participating in some workshop since you are being supervised by a member who is facilitating that workshop. The best example is the laser which requires you to have your credentials added in nomos (and therefore be a member) to use the laser.

The resin printers do fall under that category of needing training so yes. You are expected to be a member to use the in house resin printers.
