The jank has now been fully supplanted and the area reorganized. The volume control still does not work because the rotary encoder on the new box is rather broken, but we should have a remote anyway, and a remote fixes this completely. The bass volume control now is properly coordinated with the volume on the box.
All the wire related objects are ~approximately not occupying any space on the shelf anymore so the shelf can now contain the books that were piled in this vicinity.
