Anyone have a 2007ish Matrix or Vibe?

I have a 2007 Toyota Matrix (also apparently sold as a Pontiac Vibe) that has a leaky sun roof…
I have done all the regular stuff (made sure the drain tubes are attached and are clear, etc)
Even took it to the dealer who couldn’t determine exactly why it was leaking and wanted $1,500 to replace the drain pan assembly…
I’m not sure that would fix it and I’m not sure how it is leaking but I’d like to check another similar car to see if there are potential any sort of shields or something like that missing…

Thanks

Paging @toptekkie or Doctor Modo as we like to call him.

I asked my friend who is a Parts manager at Toyota for 10 years, he said

“Leaking sunroofs arnt common but we do repair them on occasion. If it isn’t the drain tubes then it could very well be the pan. Water leaks are the worst/hardest thing to diagnose and can take multiple trips and hours of labour.
The problem is when it’s in the roof it can move along the headliner and come out somewhere else in the car and that throws off the technician. We just had a sienna that needed the sun roof resealed but because it was coming out by the drivers seat belt the tech was thrown off and took him for ever to find the actual leak”

Hope that helps.

Thanks for talking to your friend…

I have the headliner ripped out now to better see what is happening…
The pan and drains seem to work fine and allow water to drain that leaked through (as it is designed to do)

I’m thinking that perhaps water is getting into a place the system is not designed for or there is some sort of shield (or something) missing)…

I’ll try a hose tomorrow and see what i can find…

Should have done it in the summer when asked to… Derp…

For what its worth - at Modo I put soapy water outside around the outer
seal and blow compressed air inside to see where the bubbles come out -
experience has shown that its often the outer seal that is letting the
water in, in the first place.
You may have to check the windscreen - especially if its ever been replaced

  • as often we find the seal the top is not entirely waterproof and the
water creeps behind the ceiling liner.
