A modest proposal for the new space

We haven’t got as much room in the new space and we want to keep as many toys as possible. That means we have to use every part of the buffalo.

A 2x4’ pegboard with 1/4" holes, attached to the back of the bench with 1/4"x5" zap straps. Some of the hooks I made with old coat hanger and some pliers. Others I got from a kit. The kit comes with these black plastic snaps that hold the hooks really nicely.

In the last space I setup the original big wall o tools. Worked great, everyone could see where stuff went. Only mistake was drawing the outline of each tool directly on the wall. The next version I’d put a piece of paper with an outline or cutout of the tool, held with scotch tape. Then they could be reorganized if needed, without leaving a mess.

What about the small tools that were in the wooden drawers?
a) Keep them in a bag like the files in the picture (top right).
b) 3d print a custom holder (learn solidworks!) and glue in a magnet.

What about the lighting?
Depends on how dark the new space is. I like the idea of only turning on a light where you need it to save power.

Plug into the bench front. Turn on the bench to turn on the lights.
These prices are for 1pc each. ordering ~20 at once would bring the cost down, even if it’s just saving on the shipping.

What about the monitors?
What about them? I only know of two that saw regular use - the solidworks and the 3D printer. If you need another monitor, add extra zap straps to the pegboard (so it can hold the weight) before you mount the LCD screen.

What will it cost?

For 16 benches, total cost of both mods would be $750, including zip ties.
For just the pegboard, total cost is $400.

I would be happy to do the setup when we move in. Once the benches are in place it’s not easy to zap strap the pegboards in place.

Who’s with me?

I like the idea in principle. I also think we should put a sticker on every tool with where it goes. For metal/small tools, we can write the location with nail polish. (that means that someone that doesn’t know the organizational details can figure out where to put stuff back!).

After two moves our boxes are starting to look a little crappy. I love what’s been done to the small parts bins. I want to do the same to the larger bins.

A single sheet of A4 paper folded in half can stand up in a shoebox and still be easily read from the outside. It would be the same system we used in the last space, but made flexible so that it won’t break if we ever move to a new space, or repurpose the bin, or change the contents, etc. Leave no trace kinda thing.

Cost: cleaning off the old shoeboxes (goo gone+ elbow grease?), a pack of A4 paper, a sharpie.

I suggest that new labels whenever large enough to permit, be made with marker and stencil or a label printer depending on size. I may or may not have some packed up. If I can’t find them and you don’t already have some I’ll get some, or eventually and ideally… lazer cut some 1" and 2" commodore 64 font. Printed labels are 12mm, and an 8m ribbon costs ~28$. There’s no rush to transition, there are probably lots of labels to retrofit and of course things can continue to get labeled by hand. Life’s too short to waste time squinting and I suspect there is some subliminal effect of an appearance of tidyness that is self-perpetuating.

I have about a sheet in a few pieces of pegboard around here that I can bring to move-in or next earliest opportunity if my schedule permits to save a couple bucks.
