Where's the hanging monitor mobile?

Hi all,

I realize VHS is a do-ocracy, but I feel I’ve made a decision that may be controversial and I want to inform you of it.

There’s a workshop on Saturday, so to clear some space for it I went to temporarily modify the hanging monitors. My plan was to detach the monitors and move the carriage aside. However, looking it over I realized that all of the weight rested on a single nut on a carriage bolt.

Basically, moving the mobile causes the nut to spin undone because of the weight. When I noticed it, it was actually partially off the bolt. What this means is that two 22 inch monitors and a 3 inch lead cannonball fishing weight were eventually going to fall from the ceiling. This could lead to injured people, possibly even a concussion for whomever was underneath it.

So I took it down, and packed in a grey crate here:

Everything is together in a bin, nothing has been thrown out. This was my decision alone, and I take responsibility for it.

This is not intended as an insult or an attack. I think the hanging monitors are an interesting notion that could be made more safe; please consider amending their design.

Good to see safety issues addressed. I see no problem removing these for a workshop.

It is not clear to me if the hanging monitors are a personal project in which case they should follow the same storage guidelines as other personal projects.

If it is a VHS project then do-ocracy applies and as long as it can be restored in 4 hours then its fair game.

Best

Thanks Andrew. I think you made the right decision and appreciate you posting here. Hopefully they can go back up in a safer way.

FYI, if/when it get hung up again, a washer and a nylon lock nut instead of the hex nut would prevent that nut from coming loose with use.
