I’ve been meaning to get on a tour there for a while, definitely interested so I updated the Doodle.
Sat or Sun work best for me or if possible late Fridays (after 6pm…)
I’d be up for a field trip for sure!
Added self and spouse to Doodle.
The response here has been great! Thanks everyone for posting availability on Doodle.
I’m still waiting for a response from the TRIUMF tour coordinator. I’ll try phoning again tomorrow if I don’t hear back via email otherwise we might do a first attempt at dropping in on one of their regular times on a Friday.
Hi, did you ever hear back on a date from Triumf?
@ambrose I’ve sent them 3 emails and left 2 voice mails… I’m loosing hope! I also have been busy the last week and a half so haven’t had a chance to continue the persistent follow up.
I’m thinking at this point our best bet is to crash the tour on a Friday afternoon… anyone else want to try and get ahold of them? maybe they are screening my calls…
Bump. Was there any response to your emails and voice mails?
There was not. I haven’t tried to contact them again in a long time though. Worth starting over.
A friend of mine is a nuclear physicist at TRIUMF, so if you’re cool with me reaching out to him tomorrow to find out why we aren’t getting a reply, I’d be happy to do that, but I don’t want to interfere if you’ve made progress contacting them. Let me know and I’ll call asap.
@AndrewTilston sounds great! It’s been a almost 2 months now since I last tried to get ahold of them so I wouldn’t worry about shaking them down but if you have the inside track to organize us a tour that would be ideal!
I left a voicemail with my friend yesterday… no answer yet but I’ll post back when I’ve heard from him.
Sweeeeeet… so my buddy called me back last night and we’re good to go. He’ll give us the tour himself but it’ll have to NOT be this week or weekend as he’s pretty slammed.
It looks like the original intention was to schedule this for a Friday at 1pm. Should we continue to aim for this? And if that is the case I’ll loop back with Friday, June 19th at 1pm as our target and see if he’s available at that time.
Once we’ve established the date we’ll field another “who’s in?” poll and give him a heads up on numbers. (Now that I’m thinking about it… I’m not sure if there is a limit either, so I’ll ask him when checking for availability on June 19th)
I’m still keen!
If things don’t work out, I also happen to do science and be trained to give tours at TRIUMF. I can always speak to the tour coordinator directly for you (FYI, we have a new tour coordinator since February). I will personally be available any time after June 25th.
I look forward to you guys coming out, it’s super cool here!
Awesome! Thanks @AndrewTilston for taking the reins on this!
The main reason we had discussed Friday afternoon was because the tours at that time of the year were only offered on Wednesdays and Fridays during business hours. If we can do it on the weekend or in the evening during the week we may get a better turn out.
@climber thanks for offering to be a back up for the tour!
We had a lot of interest from the membership for this tour the first time around, planning two sessions may not be a bad idea if we now have a couple of people that can offer the tour.
+1-ing a weekend tour. I can’t make it to a 1pm tour unless I take time off ( which isn’t going to happen ).
I’ve done the TRIUMF tour before, and I’d be up to doing it again,
provided I’m free on the day that it’s held on.
Every tour is a little different! Depends who’s giving it.
I’ll add a shameless plug for a free lecture at Science World taking place on July 7th at 7pm in the Omnimax Theatre:
“Unveiling the Universe: The Search for Dark Matter”
In collaboration with
TRIUMF, we’re proud to present the next event in our Unveiling the Universe
lecture series. Join us in welcoming Dr Chris Jillings and his presentation,
"The Search for Dark Matter…or How To Know The Universe from a Hole in
the Ground."
The talk will take us on a journey to the deepest places on Earth, where
dark matter hunters use ultra-sensitive detectors to search for what cannot be
seen.
Just to link everyone to the trip I arranged…
